In an attempt to rescue this thread from death (since the previous topic was very specific and didn't garner much attention) I've switched it up.

So now this is a thread to talk about outdoor pursuits. Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, bush & woodcraft, urbex, kayaking and anything in that vein. Any hobby you can do outside can be discussed here. Tell a story or post a video or whatever.

Personally I live to go fishing and camping quite a lot. I don't go in for tents as the jungle here doesn't allow much level ground for it so I camp with a hammock, like this -

I like to watch videos on YT of other people sharing their hammock set-ups so I can compare them to mine.

I don't personally, but I work with a guy that does and he also won't purchase newer cars because of all the computer electronics. Drives a carburated 70's Chevy pick up.

I'm into bushcraft, but that's as far as it goes.

I'm a big fan of Ray Mears and I enjoy watching his series.

I try to go out in the wild a couple times a year with a minimal amount of supplies and tools. Living in nature and living on what I can collect/catch is a great experience and a perfect break from modern life.

I think I've seen all of Ray's shows. He's my favourite wilderness guide/ survival instructor to watch. I've learnt so much from his shows.

I like camping because it gives me a chance to get back to nature. I try to do a bit of bushcraft, if I remember any of what Ray said, and often spend time in the jungle chilling in my hammock or walking through the streams. My fishing is rarely successful but it's still something I enjoy getting out of the city for.

I think I'd be considered a prepper? I'm definitely very interested in prepping and read about it as well as follow several groups. I'm less nervous about things though, I think, as I generally only focus on winter weather, summer storms, and job loss as possible threats. We don't make enough money for the more exciting prepping. I'd like to though! :)

I have easily 3 months of food stored, 6 months if you like beans and rice a lot, and I keep multiples of pretty much everything in case we can't get more in a timely manner. My family was not-enough-food-poor when I was young, so having enough to cover us in case the hubby loses his job and until he would find a new one is important to me.

In the winter, I focus on having winter gear in the back of the car we use most, although the bin o' stuff, blanket, and shovel make @Wolfe a little crazy. :P My car isn't used much at all and only has basic supplies in it. We don't have a secondary heat source at home though, and that worries me.

In the summer, I focus on being aware of the weather with our radio as tornadoes are occasionally a problem. Flash flooding and power outages occur too, but rarely.

I do have quite a few minor first aid supplies, and I have had first aid and CPR training as well as training for search and rescue when I was younger, but I was unable to continue because of my health. I'm not happy with what I do have for supplies though and am slowly expanding them.

My big weakness is that a LOT of my food is in the freezer. I don't have the equipment or skill to can, so meats and veggies are all frozen. I abhor commercially canned veggies! But the freezer makes about half of the food vulnerable. Also, a power outage in the winter would kill our heat and we'd be forced to leave and head to my parents, about six miles away. They have a lovely wood stove.

So, I think I'm a prepper. :)

Back when I used to go off-roading in trucks, I had a lot of survival gear. The potential for breaking down or getting stuck was fairly high. Usually ran with multiple vehicles just in case someone got stuck. This is usually what I had in the bed of my truck in a locked box.

  • Personally built tire rack to hold a full size spare
  • Tow straps multiple sizes
  • Come along
  • Chain fall
  • Shackles
  • Clevises
  • Duct tape (I actually made an alternator belt out of this once in an emergency!)
  • Rope
  • Spark plugs
  • Tire inflation devices
  • Jumper cables
  • Many tools
  • Candles
  • Lighters
  • Flash lights
  • Wires
  • Blankets
  • Chains
  • High lift jack that reaches 5 feet. Can be used to pull or lift vehicles
  • Razor knife
  • Various screw drivers
  • Much more that I cant remember

I've never been hunting or camping, but I like to fish. my most recent trip was a few weeks ago, a 1/2 mile offshore in the Atlantic ocean. Caught a bunch of weakfish that day.

And I've been hiking a lot recently becasue I'm on the cross country team for school.

I really need to learn how to fish better. Last night I caught a clam in a small river but that was it. I haven't caught anything worth writing about since I was in China a few years back.

Camping is a great thing to combine with fishing, especially for overnight or long trips. I like to pack a hammock and a tarp so I can chill out when the sun gets too hot and then resume my fishing once it cools down.

What kind of rigs do you use?

I'm currently using these home made paracord thingys...

There are lots of crab and crayfish in my local reservoir but I don't bother catching them because I get a bad gut from shellfish despite enjoying the taste.

If I go out camping at the weekend I might see if I can improvise some traps to catch some.

I enjoy going camping, my dad was always into that so naturally we'd always go when I was younger. We still usually go at least once a year. My uncle owns a cabin up by the Promised Land State Park which is pretty secluded with lots of lakes and other things around it. Couple random photos

This is the boat launch just down the gravel road from the cabin.

And then up the road there's Lake Wallenpaupack which is a huge man made lake made by the PPL electric company which is used to generate electricity. Photo doesn't do it justice, it's a massive lake.
