I've been looking forward to this game for some time now and after hearing and reading that this game has the best physics engine, it got me more amped. When the game came out and I went onto the first race, I noticed one very big flaw, the physics engine. It SUCKS. With driving aids off it's bad. With driving aids on, it's still bad. The cars are "floaty" and when you TAP another car, you literally go spinning. This game has caused me to get really mad and punch my wheel many times. That brings me to another point, the force feedback for the wheel is just terrible and at some points, I'm literally forced to use a controller.

It was also said that the AI are "smart". Well I can tell you now that they aren't. They've run me off course, spun me out, and smashed into me a countless amount of times. I would MUCH rather play Shift 1 over this garbage.

This game is terrible, the physics engine is pretty much out of a game like Mario Kart. Why would anyone claim that this game has the best physics engine or even come close to saying that this is a sim racer? It has the worst physics engine I've ever seen and it is NOT a simulator. The guys at Slightly Mad Studios are quite literally slightly mad.

A new addition to the game is engine swaps. When I heard about it, I thought it would be neat to do some swaps. When I got the game, it was already predetermined what engine you would get it you did an engine swap. I was alright with that until I noticed that you can place a C32b engine from an NSX into an S2000. Oh wait, you can also place it into a Civic Si. Really SMS? Really?

The only thing I like about this game is the selection of cars. That's it.

I'm going to give this game another few days. If I still hate it as I do right now, I'll get a full refund and get Crysis 2 instead.

I figured the game would have similar physics to the first, so I didn't buy all the hype saying the physics would rival GT. I feel bad for those that did, but I went into the game expecting similar physics to Shift, and overall I am very happy with my purchase.

I also think the AI is way too aggressive (not as bad as the original) but according to a select few on here that all lies with my lack of driving skill. :boggled:

I can understand why people who bought into all the hype would be upset, but overall I think the game has improved over the original in every way (except menu's. The menu's in this game are awful) and I look forward to seeing this game as an actual rival to the GT/Forza series. Makes me want to get my PC rig back up and running as I'm sure modders will take care of the PC physics, but hopefully ES will let SMS make an actual Sim next time.

I was enjoying the game until i drove the porsche, it's amazing that porsche would allow their cars in shift but not in GT5.

The physics engine is indeed very advanced, although the data fed into it may not be entirely accurate.

On my wheel it is more realistic than TDU, Dirt2 and really is about as 75% realistic as GT5. Where does the mario kart impression comes from? maybe you have yet dial in the wheel properly? or your car has a really bad setup? I have about 9 cars so far and most of them is pretty realistic out of the box, take a stock supra and lap a bit on bath rust, does it not handle neutrally and predictably?

Are you telling him to punch his wife? you shouldnt say that to guy who reacts like this with a game :dopey:

The thing is, I'm not the type of person who would go on a rampage. This has been the only game that has gotten me fired up enough to get really mad.

FYI Crysis 2 sucks might wanna get something different maybe wait for dirt 3 in may. I have only had 3 hours with the game and i am starting to get the hang of it it wont replace GT5, but I am enjoying playing the game so far I do however respect youtr opinion we just differ i am gonna give the game about a week and see if it grows on me.

Just a little advice, try adjusting the settings for your wheel under the controls options. It makes a world of difference. The cars don't feel as "floaty" if you set your wheel up right. I will however agree, the default settings feel like driving on ice. Someone on the forums here actually posted a great guide for setting up your wheel. I did it, now it feels tons better. Much closer to how GT5 acts with my wheel.

I don't quite see where the Mario Kart comment comes from though. Even with the default settings, it's no where near that bad.

*EDIT* Here's the thread: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=196575

The cars handle much better when you go to tuning and increase the steering lock. Unfortunately you have to do this for each car individually. And to make things confusing there's two different Steering lock options in two different places. There is one in the quick setup option (or basic or whatever it's called). I set that to about 85. Then there's another one mixed in with the other options. I've seen its max value vary depending on the car but on three different cars I've set that one to max.

So basically turn your steering lock way up. This helped me go from "Okay I wish my car would turn when I turn the wheel" to "okay thats more like it"

Lets hope they make a patch to make the physics better if u ask me its not playable atm, atleast with a wheel

And on a 52 inch tv ps3 graphic sucks. Not fun to actely see the pixels clearly..

MAN i wish it had gt5 physics thene this game would beeen sooo freaking awsome.. To bad racing part sucks

Sry for beeing so negativ BUT i had high hopes for this game..

I cannot get used to the feeling I am not controlling the car.

Taking it back today and get Motorstorm 3.

I'm a long time GT fan and I don't mind trying new racing games but these reviews don't answer the fundamental question of realism. It as if all of you guys are basing your opinions based on GT5 physics, not actual real life physics. I would really like to know if Shift 2 delivers that genuine racing feel, not whether it trumps GT5. Who cares anyway and we all admit GT5 has some major hiccups.

I mean a racing game is a racing game. It's a GAME. You take out the inevitable fear of crashing, G forces and mechanical problems then you take out most of the real racing experience already. GT5's tire physics do feel stickier than what I feel in real life, and you all put racing softs on your cars in GT5 don't you? How real is that?

I haven't tried Shift 2 yet myself, but I can already see that Shift 2 captures the on track atmosphere much better than GT5's vast empty spaces. It may not looks as polished, but it looks fun with much better music, more character.

I would like some comments from people with real on track experience than seasoned sofa racers.

I'd actually prefer if say Tiff Needell/Ben Collins etc would play the game and share their experience, you know, people who've driven PRODUCTION cars at and over the limit. I think that's quite different to track drivers who have well tuned cars with slicks/semi-slicks and upgraded suspension etc.

From comments across the forums it seems that those who are tuning the cars to tighten them up are finding the physics/handling quite good, so I'm with you, I'd love to hear more comments from experienced RL drivers, but for me from those with production car experience, but not "Yeah I've driven my car really fast and it's nothing like that in game," because in those situations I bet they weren't driving past the limits...

Seems like the physics 'controls' are toned down or added to, but to me it looks like the underlying engine is very good. I'll have a better idea once I play it later today...

U think its weird that we compare physics with gt5? Its the best car/racing physics out there. And it have helped me with drifting real life. So if u ask me gt5 is the closest we get to Real life in 2011.

And trust me u cant compare shift 2 with real life racing. Shift 2 is like a reverse arcade game.

But i believe its fix-able. If thay can fix the wublie feel on all the cars i tryd so far. To be honest i dont know how much work its in chaging some part of the physics but hope its easy and will be patched

I must agree that the physic engine in a bit advanced. In fact the hardcore guys should love this. Its not GT physics, its Shift physics. Honesty after playing this for the past 2 days, I actually believe shift has the more realistic physics. Think about it. In GT the cars hug the road, not slipping no loss of grip unless you have traction control off and your in a turn.

If you set up your wheel right, and give the physics engine a chance, you will start to learn it and get better. I did and I was sucking at first until I got a descent will setup.

This game is pretty deep. After two day playing GT5 on release day, I was in the 30% range.

I am not the best driver there is but I am descent. This game is challenging. I don't always win and the A.I. will battle with you. I found out that if you drive clean, for the most part, they drive clean. If you bump them or cut them off, expect to get bump or spun around.

Autolog is a great feature. It really motivates you to compete with your friends times. Overall, I am very happy with my game as well. You get longevity with this game that's for sure. GT5 will not be played in my unit for quite sometime. If they give DLC tracks, all the ones from GT4, I will return. Until then, I will stick with Shift 2 and F1 2010.

Oh, night driving is awesome. I can't do without the dynamic weather system. I hate weather anyways but Shift makes up for weather with night racing and its on more than a few tracks.

This is the greatest and most worthy thread that ever was. EVERY SINGLE person in the world cares that you suck and can't drive so you blame the game. Forget about the hundreds of thousands that have no problem, you're lack of ability, talent, skill, and common sense are all that matters.

The game sucks solely because you are awful at it.

A Winner Is You!!

Can we keep discussions/reviews about the game to existing threads and the 'punch your wife' commonest are both offensive and violation of the AUP.

If you played the first shift, the handling in this one shouldn't be a surprise. I guess some people are spoilt from the physics in gt5.
