I've known about this movie for a while now, but searching on this site has turned up nothing. Feel free to point me in the right direction if discussion already exists.
Anyway, The Last Stand is packing quite some heat. Director Kim Je-Woon is behind the cameras for his first English project. Ex-Governator, Terminator, Kindergarten Cop and all-round action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger leads here as as Ray Owens, a former LAPD officer turned Sommerton Junction sheriff, while Johnny Knoxville is present as the *slightly* loopy weapons enthusiast and museum owner Lewis Dinkum. You might think that this small border town in Arizona is going to be pretty peaceful, until...
Enter Gabriel Cortez, played by Eduardo Noriega. He's the baddest cartel leader this side of the equator and he's not about to let the FBI have their way. He busts out of a prisoner convoy, takes a federal agent, Genesis Rodriguez, hostage and begins his run for Mexico. If you thought catching him was easy, think again. Burrell and his violent mercenaries have enough firepower to clear a path, and Cortez is driving a modified 250mph Corvette ZR1 that will outrun anything (even a helicopter!).
Now, Forest Whitaker, playing Agent John Bannister, has a tricky call to make. The hostage means that they can't call in an airstrike, and nothing on the road can catch the ZR1, so he phones Owens and tells him Cortez is on his way, and that Sommerton Junction is their last chance to stop him before he escapes forever. Instead of getting out of Dodge, Owens rallies the small town, preps his Camaro ZL1, deputizes Dinkum and locks and loads a .30 cal Vickers machine gun.
Can Cortez blast his way into Mexico? Can Owens stop him from getting there? And who cannot wait for January 18th to take The Last Stand?
