Earlier today, there's been talk that the NBA broke off talk ties to the NBPA about a new collective bargaining deal. While the NHL lockout has been long documented, the NBA could follow suit. Not to take away anything from the NHL, but more people are into the NBA as opposed to the NHL, so to see this go into a lockout would be a bad deal for bigtime basketball. Of course, if there was a lockout, you'd have to look to the upcoming NCAA Basketball season for your basketball fix. Either that or look for some other b-ball action.

How do you all feel about this issue?

are the nba players not getting paid enough?
They are. Player's Union feels that, since NBA can't function without the players, players should get more share of $$$ coming in to the NBA teams.

If players are actually getting screwed out of money, I'd understand the tough stance from the NBPA. What they are doing(or has been doing) are just trying to extort money from the team owners. These owners/investors took a risk with their money to start this league and for some reason, NBPA thinks they have the right to tell these business owners to pay the salaries NBPA decides. With "zero" experience, your minimum wage as a NBA Player is close to $400,000. Depending on how many years you've played in NBA, your "minimum" wage could be over a $1 million!. I guess that's not enough. 👎

Every time I hear Union, I have nothing but negative thoughts. Maybe Union was a good thing years ago, they are just in the way of things today IMO.

Hey all those other sports deserve it a lot more than hockey does... They make so much more money it's ridiculous.

I still don't understand why they get paid millions just for playing a kid's game for a few hours, seems like a waste of money to me.

Hells no man, I'm a huge hockey fan! What I don't get is why they pay NBA players way too much money to play a game that kids play seriously though. NHL actually has some danger too it so I can see why they deserve that much money..

Oh ok... sorry dood I'm just a little bitter, but yeah they do deserve a lot more than this other "inferior" sports, at least in terms of $$. I know people will try and stick up for their sport but unless you can tell me they multi-task don't waste your time.

All pro athletes are overpaid, Vipfreak. Ridiculously overpaid at that. Just because hockey is your favorite sport doesn't mean that they should be getting paid the most. The whole problem with the NHL is that the players have become a bunch of greedy bastards who want more money than the owners can bring in. Hell, they work hard for it, but they still don't deserve millions of dollars a year just for playing a game.

(Note: I've been playing hockey for the past 14 years now, and there's nothing I'd like to see more than the NHL coming back, but I am ashamed by the greed of the players.)

I think I'd enjoy professional sports a whole lot more than I do now if everybody's salaries went down.

On the topic of basketball, I can't even watch the NBA anymore because it seems like it's more about the money than it is the game. College basketball is so much more exciting.

I guess I should have been more clear about that. Yes, All sports are wayyyyyyyyyyy over paid, but out of all the sports hockey is the sport I think (objectively) that earns their money the most period for what they have to do.

Don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.

I wonder how much more or less interesting these professional sports would be if there wasn't any money on the line to begin with.

Oh and vipFRAK how can I not like hockey. I am Canadian!

Players do deserve a lot of money, because it takes talent to play professional sports(before you flame me, read my first post). As long as the fans want to follow the teams, players and wear their hats and jerseys, players should get paid. Having said that, when minimum wage is close to $400,000 and some players are getting multi-year contracts exceeding $100 million(!), just stop your whining and play the 🤬 sport. Professional athletes really need to realize how lucky they are to play sports for living and make millions of $$$. I say again, all Player's Union is doing these days is just ruining things for everybody. GET RID OF THE UNION!

P.S. If NHL players are underpaid, it's because of the market size. Salary has very little to do with how dangerous the sport is.

Hockey sucks.

I don't think it's so much the players union, there are players that do it because they really do love the sport (I'd hope :scared: ) But, It's pretty much up to each player and they will soon be pursuaded to play for money not accomplishment.

This thread is about the NBA lockout. It has everything to do with the Player's Union(NBPA), they are the only reason we are having this discussion right now.

I was saying that in reference to this :) :

Sorry, I worded that wrong. :D I actually enjoyed watching hockey..... IN THE WINTER OLYMPICS! I can't stand NHL, because of what I see in the sports news highlight. It seems that NHL games often turns into an circus looking boxing match. :P My "feeble" brain can't comprehend, why this is entertaining. It's a major turnoff for me. Some fans in the States says, they have to allow it, because it's an very physical sport and we need to allow players to let the "steam" out without using their hockey stick........... Yeah, great argument. I guess it's ok then!

Anyone that is a true Hockey fan wouldn't never exclude fighting and physical contact from Hockey, it is part of the essence of Hockey. I myself like the speed of the game more but am most of the time amused by the fights although I'd actually hate to be the one that is on the receiving side of some of them hits. :scared:

Viper, maybe the reason why you don't like baseball and basketball is because they don't allow the slugfest!

Edit: I bet the only basketball game you've ever enjoyed is the Indiana Pacers/Detroit Pistons game. You know, before Ron Artest got suspended. ;) ;)

 Guess you didn't read my post above. Anyway, even if Hockey was just fights I'd still take that over your sorry ass sport where they cry foul when someone gets touched on the hand.

Relax, I'm just playin'! I get the feeling you're tense person. :sly:

Regarding the NBA players crying foul: If you say that NBA sucks, I'd agree with you, but crying foul has nothing to do with the toughness of the NBA players(have you seen them lately?), it's the B.S. NBA officiating. NBA conveniently decides which fouls to call and when. Sometimes, they don't call them at all. Until NBA start refereeing the games fairly, it will stay an second rate league(NHL is third rate... wait, AAA baseball is third rate, so NHL is fourth rate. :P ).

It actually is called a foul. :sly:

I sent an email to the NBA today, regarding the players collective agreement. One of the major issues in the discussion between the league and the player's union is the minimum age of the players. I believe it's currently 17(might be higher for foreign players), but NBA wants to raise it to 19, because IMO, high schoolers are bringing the level of the league down. They are just not ready for pro ball most of the time, exception; KG and Amare Stoudemire.

Here, I'll just paste my email to the NBA:

My email to NBA
I have an suggestion regarding the players collective bargaining agreement.

I understand the NBA wants to move the player's minimum age upto 19, because it's bringing the overall level of the game down. While I totally understand the league's point of view, I think anyone whose 18 has a right to play. If player out of high school isn't ready to play, teams shouldn't draft him. But of course, the team wants to secure the contract with the prospect, so teams are forced to draft the prospects early.

What I suggest is, let 18 years old players come into the league. BUT ONLY WITH AN ONE YEAR CONTRACT. This way, teams will be hesitant to draft an high school prospect and while still opening an door to the NBA for 18 year olds, it would make more sense for them to play college ball for at least a year.

I'm really hoping this would get thru(though I kinda doubt it) and help with the agreement talks, somehow. Please try to forward it to the right people. Please!

As I've said in the email, I think this message will just get lost. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though. :D I think my idea's an really good compromise for the league and the union. What do you think?

 FREAK, Basketball is a sport that if there is interference – even if it is a minor slap on the wrist – it could throw his shooting completely out of range and you know that. A slap on the wrist is just as bad as getting nailed in the neck – the chances of you nailing the shot are slim. Therefore to get the points – you have to go to the free-throw line. Despite popular beliefs, sometime crying fouls works at times.

If I wanted to watch someone get his ass kicked – I’d rather watch boxing or UFC. Hockey to me is boring. But of course – that’s my personal opinion.

*yawn* I'm tired. FREAK, your the best!!

Get over it... Hockey players are wearing a **** load of padding and getting hit all the time yet they are still able to shoot the puck. :dopey:

Along with players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, and many more successful big time players. But a few years of college wouldn't hurt them would it?!

I have no problem with it either way - my opinion on this matter is basically - I have none. I couldn't care either way. Making the minimum to 19 isn't as bad as most people think. A year of learning may actually help the young player.

Either way - it doesn't really affect me much. Most high school players aren't like Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, or Lebron James. They can't take the punishment the NBA dishes out. I say college might actually help. Seems like I have an opinion on this matter after all.
