I just love this era of F1. The cars are so pure and raw in both their aesthetics and mechanics. No wings, no ground-effects...just little 4 wheeled torpedos. Pure form follows function. I love watching them corner. They slide like a sportscar. To me they are the best mix of everything. Classic driving style with modern (kinda) speeds.

Question...I never knew F1 AND F2 raced together? Was that just for the Nordschleife or was that what all races were?

There were a few races where F1 and F2 cars raced concurrently; I believe the 1967 German GP was the last example of this. The F1 drivers and F2 cars had separate grids; but they started at the same time with the waving of the national flag. The 1958, 1966, and 1967 races were the only GP's run in this format...but something tells me there's one more I'm forgetting. I suppose the 14+ mile circuit needed extra competitiors; only 14-18 F1 cars were making the rounds to all the races at the time...you've got to give the public a few more cars to look out for, when they're only running a dozen or so laps!

In any case, the 1958 German GP was memorable for a few reasons; sadly, Peter Collins lost his life while batting the lead Vanwalls of Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks. But a new chapter was written into F1: Bruce McLaren was driving in the concurrent F2 race, and took the win in his class. In fact, he was driving so well, he finished ahead of the 6th place finisher in the F1 class!

The 1967 German GP was the "debut" of Jacky Ickx; he also ran faster than some of the lesser lights of F1 to win his class.

Thanks a million times man, what an awesome video. That was an exciting year in motorracing too, the second year in the 3-litre formula one, the old original Nordshleife before it was resurfaced in 1970(I believe) and without armco barriers.I know Grand Prix Legends but I really hope someday we'll get GPL for a console! These cars are so awesome. I've build both 1/12th re-issue models by Tamiya of the Lotus 49 and the Honda more than ten years ago now and now it's great to have this vid of the cars in action at the "Everest of racetracks"

I see that McLaren's engine problems go way back, lol.
Yeah, the Eagles of McLaren and Gurney were notoriously unreliable. It was one of the fastest cars in the field, but only when it was working! Gurney only finished 2/11 races in '67, finishing 3rd in Canada and winning at Spa. McLaren also finished only 2 races, taking 4th at Monaco and 7th at Canada.

Fascinating video though. It's incredible seeing the cars get air at flugplatz. And just seeing the skill of the drivers; anyone who's played GPL knows how insane 8'20 laps around the Nurburgring in the '67 GP cars is.

is the starting line in GT4 in the wrong place? i have a map of the nurb and it says the starting line is on the long straight??? weird i thought the pit lane was down at the starting line in GT4 tho, i dont know i'll post a pic of the map i have

I love the old backstretch. Imagine a current day F1 car on the old Nurb!?

Could a modern F1 car even survive? I get the feeling that Nur would rip one of those spider-esque modern carbon contraptions to pieces.

Assuming you could get a driver brave and skilled enough to do it the car would survive given the correct set-up etc. However they are too fast today, it would be far too dangerous.
