Since everyone is baffled by it (including myself) was there ever any reason given as to why the game is online only? Did PD and Sony not learn from the latest NFS that online only doesn't work?

Is it to stop cheating and or "Hacking" cars? Does Kaz not want people messing with his game that badly that he makes the entire thing, saves included, accessible only while you're online AND a PS plus subscriber?

And another Question, if there is anyone who has the sort of knowledge to answer this... Would it even be possible to revert back from this online only Format? Could it essentially be a poison that slowly but surely kills the game?

Dear Kaz,

I am a 33 years old mexican, that wake up 7 am everyday to go to work. After 9 hours in the office and 2 hours in the gym I can finally go home, driving for around 40 minutes from the company site to home. While in the car I am thinking about my progress in thhe game and planning in buying a Toyota GT86 and start working in a special livery based on the JDM Culture as a tribute (Thanks to the gran turismo series I become a fan of the JDM Culture).
Finally after the long trip I get home, have some dinner and took a shower. the clock is marking around 10:00 pm when I started GT Sport. I completed a batch of License test finishing up to test 32. With the credits earned I went and finally bought that GT86, I was working really excited in the livery, and when I was close to finish it and tried to put a new sitck in alayer I got a message about server maintenance and that my progress can't be saved. After more of and hour working in the livery I can't save it, I decided to check the estimated time for the servers being down and apparentely they will be down for 2 hours.
I checked my clock, it says it is the 11:20 pm here in México. Unfortunately I can't stand awake on my PS4 waiting to the servers being restored again as it is really late here and I have to wake up early tomorrow again to go to work. Close to go to bed several feelings pass through my head, first of all sadness due not being able to save that livery that end up consuming around an hour of work and couldn't be saved, then in comes the frustration, because at my age (technically at the half of the expected lifetime) the free time is sparse and I can't help but felt let down by the people that took the decision to make the save only online.
I can understand that the progression and the focus of the game it is online when I preordered my game, but I was never expected that something basic, as a save data require to be always online and that I can't use features as the scapes or the livery editor that are not directly connected to the online progression of the game.
Then I felt anger, because in this case, it was just a livery that don't have a real impact in the game, but then I though in the scenario where someone it is doing one of the endurance challenges, challenges that require time, and after an exhausting session that user is able to get gold but can't save because the servers are down.
A situation like this just create a feeling of fear; I am fear of start and endurance race and then got nothing as reward because the servers are down; I am fear of putting 20 minutes in a license test to ace my times and get a gold result just to don't be able to save it because the servers are under maintenance.
I have been a fan of the franchise since the very beginning, I have played every GT game up to date, they have been part of my life and they have growth up with me, but now I am fear to stop playing the games because I can't have control about my saves, to waste that valuable free time in GT Sport and lost what I did and then start to slowly stop playing the game which I growth up my entire life for a bad plan design.
I hope that you are able to read this (and to the other users of GTPlanet that could be confused why I put this here it is to have a place to generate a link to share on twitter) and that some changes could be done to the way the saves are being managed for the game, because I am not the only one with this feeling about the only online base, and this is something that just can makr the people to stop playing the game.

While this doesn't solve the overall problem, you could have put the PS4 in Rest Mode, kept Gt sport running and when you woke up for work, save the game and exit out.

Wait! if i put my PS4 in rest mode it doesn't end my gaming session??

I assume some people have data caps, so they can't have their PS4s on rest mode and getting data from the internet at all times. I know in the US and Australia data caps are really harsh.
No caps here in the UK (Well not from my ISP anyway!)

I know it's off topic, but from what I've heard, you guys have it way better than we do. We're stuck maybe 5 years behind you guys in terms of shadiness and stuff...

Ah well, as you all were.

if you just put your PS4 to rest mode you would save so much time writing this

Online only is also possibly for licensing reasons - Sony licensing.

We have a huge Comcast outage tonight - large areas of Metro Houston without internet. (I am on my cellular iPad)

So I figured, let's try a bit of GT:Sport VR around Nurburgring in the 2013 Viper. I mean stupid PD and Sony have made the game online only, with Arcade support for offline, right?

Sorry - wrong. I was about 6 minutes into my 1 lap VR race (you only get 1 lap of Nurburgring at a time - the more features I try in the game the less overall I like it - every feature is nerfed) GT:Sport closes to the PS4 menu with a message up - sorry, no can do, I can't contact my license server, sorry this Digital Copy needs to be online to verify license. I paraphrased the message - I was so mad I just pulled the plug and walked away.

WTF man? It is 2017 and this stupid title is so hamstrung and clunky I could almost look past the floating unrealistic way the Viper behaves at speed - I have driven a 13 Viper at speed, it is not as bad as this game makes it.

I have T500RS with load cell modded brakes and H shifter - GT:Sport does a very poor job of simulating how a 13 Viper stops and turns with race tires on.

But the handling was forgivable, the totally unplayable nature of the game is not.

I only hope that all you "oooh everyone has internet why the complaints" folks get to experience the joy of the one game you have that is not only a poor implementation of an online game, it is not even a complete implementation of the game it claimed it was. What the heck has Kaz been doing for the last 6 years?

That's right - mucking about being global racer playboy and wannabe racing tutor to the world.

If he wants to nurture race care drivers fine - but I am sick and tired of him doing in on MY DIME!

He needs to get out of the software game and let fresh blood take over.

While this doesn't solve the overall problem, you could have put the PS4 in Rest Mode, kept Gt sport running and when you woke up for work, save the game and exit out.

Sorry, but that is not a solution. What about the shared PS4 that someone wants use for a different purpose. No, having to tie up the device waiting for a save is not answer.

i tried that, today morning with no luck. GTS wont connect to the servers untill you restar the application i think.

It should work, it does for me. When the servers go down and you need to reconnect when they are back online, on the main screen, use the left side menu where livery, discovery features are, all the way at the bottom there is a option to reconnect to servers. As long as you dont exit the game when the servers go down, you can put the ps4 in rest mode, reconnect and then save your progeess when servers are back online.

Great post man, I feel your pain. I did the exact same thing last night. After a full day of work I had a few hours to play GT and the servers were down and the game was just broken. Spent all day looking forward to this and just.. nothing. It was so frustrating. I almost felt like taking the game back to the store for a refund but held off because I still have this ridiculous connection with GT.. I want to love this game but it just hates me back!

i gess the servers are still down then, because it didn't t work, i hit that try to reconnect button like 100 times since yesterday. But thank anyway.
isn't there a website for cheking the online status of GTS?

Thing is here in the US outages are so common it’s disgusting with the amount of money cable companies get. I have an outage every week now and what if I was doing an endurance event offline, then I wouldn’t be able to even save it. Dunno if it just kicks you out but people just have to understand the circumstances when it comes to internet accessibility, because unfortunately it’s not the same everywhere. Thanks American cable companies.

i feel you bro, im exactly like you, and its like you described my entire day, except i live 2 bloks from my office, but still it was like reading my own diary, if i had one witch i don't. hopefully they'll change this, but i doubt it.

Should work and does work are very different.
I didn't even put mine to sleep, I left it on all night long hoping to save progress in the morning. Checked the forum first thing to confirm the servers were up again, so went to save. It still wouldn't connect.
The only way I could reconnect was to close and reopen the game, obviously losing my progress.

Thanks American cable companies.

More like, "thanks outdated publicly owned infrastructure".

As much as I loathe the available ISP providers here, it doesn't change the fact a good chunk of the population is accessing the internet via cables that are older than the internet itself. Fiber Optic is slowly spreading, but there isn't much funding for it.

And that friends, is why always-online requirements are a bad thing.

You are correct, what works for some players may not work for other players. Sorry to hear your progress was lost. I am sure that PD knows how big of a deal this online save thing is by now, but will they fix it??

I wonder when the servers are down, are they down for everyone, or are they down in specific regions only? In the information center on the game sceeen they do release the schdeule when the servers are expected to down for maintenance.

I feel your pain @mastretta_mx

There is nothing worse than playing until your hands hurt and then losing your progress. I was lucky and didn't lose mine; but I had to stare at a blank screen for almost 2 hours to allow it to save after maintenance. From this thread:

Also the servers/network have gone down for about 15% of the races I've entered; and I've experienced multiple hour "maintenance" periods when playing what I thought was the offline portion of the game. When this happens you are literally "locked up" until the maintenance window ends (assuming you don't want to lose your progress). Is this the kind of showing we should expect from a Sony studio with massive funding and decades of experience? My wife just about killed me last night when I had to leave the PS4 running for almost 2 hours at a black screen (with fans running high) just to allow my 30-lap race to save. It took me an hour to finish that race and I wasn't going to shut down the PS4 and lose that progress. I had to leave it run until 11pm PST and she wanted to sleep. Luckily the progress circle came up and it saved promptly at 11pm when the servers came back online :-/

For the online events always online is of course a requirement. That's fine. But I don't like how I need to always have a connection even for almost all the offline stuff. I don't see the point. Uploading saves online is fine but not when that's the only way to save. I don't see why we couldn't have offline saving. Should the servers go down or when they pull the plug on the game we'll be left with nothing but a sliver of arcade mode content with whatever cars we bought.

As for possible hackers being the reason, just ban hackers should they use hacks in online events.

I hope the always online requirement is dropped in a later update.

The online save requirement needs to be dropped yesterday. It makes no sense at all since you cannot use anything offline which sort of defeats the purpose of a fully functional game outside of the internet. There is literally no reason to have this caveat in there in the least, just makes the end user suffer needlessly for things that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place. Bad on PD for this, this is one problem they made themselves even looking at infrastructure around the world no one with half a brain would say requirement of online makes sense in a game where the bulk of the content that doesn't need online doesn't work without online. Face palm!
