I don't know if this belongs in this section, but this is news about a road legal car, so it should, right? :sly:

I just found this article from the 9th of January about the GT-One Road Version. John Day (the guy who drove it to be homologated, and ex-WRC mechanic) and a couple more guys have decided to try and get it running again. It hasn't run since it was homologated all the way back in 1998 (it only has around 12 miles!), and it's possible it won't be able to run again as the ECU is so old it could have "forgotten" the engine map, and the laptop compatible with it was discarded long ago.

There are several very interesting bits in the article It has 550 HP due to a different camshaft, inlet manifold and fuel system, as well as the catalytic converter and massive silencers. I knew it had less power than the race car! Some sites claim it would be more powerful due to the removal of the restrictors. Ha! It weighs around 1100 kg, so it's also quite a bit heavier. Turns out the leather upholstery is heavy! As with power, some sites claim it weighs 900 kg, same as the race car. The gearbox has been modified, specifically the straight-cut gears have been replaced with helical ones.

It turns out starting it up is not quite as easy as turning a key. It needs pre-heated fluids just like the race car, so I imagine going for groceries with it would be much more annoying than I though. I have to admit I feel like an idiot for not realizing on my own that a late 90s race engine would need almost as much "pre-flight checks" as modern ones do. It's also opened my eyes as to why neither the GT-One nor most of its rivals were never sold either.

There's practically no funding, so if any issue arises (such as the ECU) it won't be fixed. But it makes me so, so happy to see the car getting some love. I've always dreamt of seeing it in action, so I hope they can get it working.

Edit: Corrected the date.

Interestingly a spare engine for the racing GT-One has recently come up for sale. I wondered if this was TGR-E selling off some old spares to fund this restoration, but it looks more like a coincidence. The engine was gifted to Mika Salo in2002 and stored since, only recently being rediscovered.

I'm a bit more surprised it's been sitting out in Europe, but upon further Googling, at least 2 of the other GT-Ones are sitting alongside it with a few other Toyota race cars of similar nature.

If Toyota has some plan to use it as a marketing tool (as the end of the article seems to theorize) alongside the new GR Super Sport & want it running for some photo ops, they will get it running again. I'm sure they're smart enough to get around the ECU issue, whether that means making significant changes or there have been updated means of accessing the ECU done in the last 20 years that hasn't been advertised (kind of like the old McLaren F1 laptop no longer necessary).
