The Village Sucks...WARNING: SPOILERS!

The purpose of this thread is to spoil the end of this piece of crap movie, in the hopes that no one else will waste their money on it in the future.

The trick ending is that there are NO creatures in the forest; the so-called "Village" consists of a group of adults who all used to attend the same therapy group for people who'd lost loved ones tragically. William Hurt's character, being rich, came up with the incredible(y stupid) idea of creating an isolated village on a wildlife compound that his father owned, and cutting off all contact with the outside world in an effort to drastically reduce the risk of tragedy re-occurring for any of them.

The stupidity starts to sink in when you realize these adults are dressing up in the "monster costumes" and terrorizing the residents, in hopes of scaring them into never leaving the village. It's so monumentally stupid that the audience booed and HISSED when I saw it in the theatre! Other than Open Water, I've never experienced such dissatisfaction from an audience in my life.

Bottom line, The Village sucks, M. Night sucks. Period. Go watch Unbreakable again if you want to witness Shyamalan in his directing prime. Don't waste your time on this turd.

I saw that too. They thought they were back in European times when it was 2004 outside. If they had any common sense, they'd realise there's no such thing as monsters.

I really enjoyed Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable was excellent. Signs had a few scares, but seemed disappointing at the end. I didn't bother seeing The Village, and I'm hard pressed to pick it up and see it.

Shyamalan is wearing out fast. He'll always make movies, but I think you'll find less and less big name stars in them. The first time watching the movie, you enjoy it, but you'll never go back for a second screening. I have Signs on DVD. Watched it once.

I wouldn't say Shyamalan sucks, I'd simply note the you can only rob a bank the same way a few times.

I thought it was alright at first, then about 1 hour till the end of the movie I had already guessed in my head what the ending was going to be. It's kind of obvious if you think about it, but everyone I talked to said that they would have never guessed the ending. The movie itself was good, but the overall story wasn't that great. I'd give it 👍 👍 👍 out of 5.

The village wasn't soooo bad. It was bad, but it wasn't any worse than signs or unbreakable. It certainly was no 6th sense - which is obviously night's best work.

The Bad
------------
- Predictable story line for the most part. I had a feeling they were somehow in modern times and that that would be the twist - so no surprise there.
- The anti-technology rant Night goes on in this movie is second only to The Last Samauri. Somehow Night (and others) seems to think that technology is the root of evil (at least that was the case in this movie), and so getting rid of technology will remove evil. Funny how that didn't work out in the movie and yet they continue to cling to this idea that it will work again.
- Stupid monsters that weren't scary
- All the wrong hype for the movie, since it was supposed to be scary and wasn't.
- It's a bad idea to name Phoenix's character lucius since that was the name of the kid in Gladiator - and so it gets us all thinking of his character in gladiator.

The Good
--------------
- Great directing. This movie was attractive and consistent.
- Great music. Very creepy but period sounding music that really gave the film a personality.
- Great acting. Wow that blind girl can act her ass off. So can Phoenix and Brody. I won't be surprised if a few of these folks get some awards.
- Good dialogue.

So the movie didn't outright suck, it was just pretty bad in that it was a bad idea and a terrible message. Aside from that it was done quite well.

I agree competely. I really did think it was an interesting concept at the end of it, and now that I think about it, an interesting concept will make me like most movies. The same goes for The Truman Show and Contact, although both of those were perhaps more consistently good than The Village (especially Contact, which is one of my favorite movies, like, ever).

Contact is a great film. Very underrated.

Thing that annoy me about Shyamalan is how he keeps inserting himself in his films. It started to really bother me in "Signs". You look at the scenery of this movie and he was so out of place. He might be an pretty good director, but an really awful actor, so he should stay out of his own movies. If it was more subtle apperance, like in the Hitchcocks films, it wouldn't be so bad. What do you guys think?

I agree, and I think it goes along with his pretentious a$$hole personality as well. His ego is huge. I love how he's the only ethnic person in the entire town in Signs...out of place. I am tired of seeing him in each movie.

Amen. I still want my money back from this one.

I hated it right after i saw it because it was hyped up to be scary and it was not one bit scary, If you dont think of it as a scary movie i dont think it was all that bad except for the monsters looking like big pigs with clothes and spikes coming out of thier backs.
