I was supposed to go and see Lucky number Slevin today but instead ended up watching The weather man. First thoughts, within the first 10 mins I was thinking this film could go either way, after the first 20 I thought, this films good, it'll stay good all the way through. The adverts for the film did misslead me, I was expecting a film that was more of a comedy, but in my opinion it was more a serious film with a few funny moments. It covered some serious issues, it showed the problems of life and how you have to work at it and how life can go in a way you don't expect it to. There were some funny scenes in it though like one where he slaps his ex's boyfriend with his gloves for no reason other than impulse and when he get's a drink thrown at him when he's with his dad.
Make no mistake, the film is not for everyone, I've seen reviews saying it's one of the best films ever to reviews saying it's one of the worst films ever. It's very slow paced, and it's generally about life. It starts Nicholas Cage as david Sprits, a weather man (if you couldn't guess) and Michael Cane as his dad, who may I say does a superb job. Theres a scene towards the end where they're both in a car together, his dad's been given a short period of time left and they're talking about stuff, it's so subtle most of it, the film that is, but scenes like that just work.
That car scene was I think one of the best scense filmed, certainly one of the best in the move. It's slow paced, but consistent, it's not an action movie incase you didn't know, if you appreciate superb acting and don't mind the odd film that doesn't have a deep plot covering terrorists, assasinations, winning the boxing title ect, you'll more than likely enjoy this film. If you really can't hack slow paced movies that don't have any action, simply don't watch it.
I personally would rate this a 9/10, well filmed, superbly acted and despite the plot being lifes a ***** and doesn't always work out how you expect it, it kept my interest and I enjoyed it. It's a love it hate it movie, you'll give it an8-10 out of 10 or a 1-3 out of 10 I don't tihnk many people will be in the middle on it.
