Following some of discussions in this thread about how we actually go about choosing the world's greatest racing circuit, I've received permission from the mods to make something of a tournament of the concept so that we can choose the best circuit in the world. Here's how it works:

Each week, you will be able to nominate circuits for a particular country, which you will then be able to vote for. The winning circuits will progress to the second round where you will be able to vote for your favourite circuit by continent. The winner will once again advance, this time to the final round where it will ompete with out favourite circuits chosen from each continent.

The purpose of this thread is to nominate circuits for each of the preliminary rounds. I'll be doing it on a continent-by-continent basis, so a contender for the final round will be chosen will be chosen before we start nominating circuits again. Here the plan:

Pool A
Week I: United States of America
Week II: Canada
Week III: Mexico and other Norh American Circuits
Tiebreaker
Week IV: North America

Pool B
Week V: Italy
Week VI: Great Britain
Week VIII: Spain
Week IX: France
Week X: Germany
Week XI: Other European Circuits
Tiebreaker
Week XII: Europe

Pool C
Week XIII: Australia
Week XIV: New Zealand
Week XV: Other Australasian Circuits
Tiebreaker
Week XVI: Australasia

Pool D
Week XVII: Japan
Week XVIII: China
Week XIX: Other Asian Circuits
Tiebreaker
Week XX: Asia

Pool E
Week XIX: Brazil
Week XX: Argentina
Week XXI: Other South American Circuits
Week XXII: African Circuits*
Tiebreaker
Week XXIII: South American and Africa

Week XXIV: The Final Round

* I've bundled Africa in with South America as these two continents have the least number of racing circuits.

As you can see, this is a long-running thing (mods, if this is too long, please advise ... and suggest alternatives, because I've got nothing). The current idea is for us to take it a week at a time, but if I find that everyone has cast their votes early, I'll advance the competition. Now there are some rules:

- Each user gets one vote each week.
- If there is more than one layout for a circuit, both may be included. For example, the Daytona Oval and Daytona Road courses may both be nominated. However, if te track has been reprofiled, only the current layout will be eligible. For example, the 1990s layout of Fuji Speedway cannot be nominated as it has since been rebuilt.
- There will only be a handful of places available for the second and third round (currently about six or eight). In the event that two circuits tie for the last remaining place, there will be a tiebreaker: a poll will have to be taken to decide which circuit goes through. This may also happen in the event that two circuits tie for votes going into the final round.

This thread is for nominations and/or discussion, but I'd like to keep the latter to a minimum if possible so I don't have to trawl through pages and pages looking for nominations. Each nomination should simply consist of the circuit name and, where possible, diagram. When nominating a circuit, you should consider its history, the challenge it presents to a driver and its popularity (these aren't fixed in any way; common sense dictates which circuits you should nominate). When I feel there have been enough nominations - I have a fair idea of which circuits will end up in the poll - I'll create a poll so you can vote for your favourite circuit in each country. Once I do that, nomination will open for the next week.

Got all that?

I now invite you to start nominating circuits for ROUND ONE: the United States of America!

EDIT: (Also, if someone wants to draw up a banners for each week like over at the Photomode Contest subforums, I'd really appreciate it as my photoshopping skills are non-existant ...)

Looks great, length should be ok, a week for each gives all members a chance to see the thread and vote and so on. I would also suggest advertising it in your sig. :)

United States of America: Road America

Guys, remember: this is just nominations, not voting. If someone has already nominated a circuit, there's no need to nominate it again - there's 100 spots available in a poll if that's what you're worried about - and I'm not going to bother with seconding nominations. Too formal.

Do defunct circuits count?

If so, my vote goes to Riverside Raceway.
Defunct circuits do count, unless they have been reconfigured or built over. For example, I can't nominate the 1990s layout of Fuji Speedway as it has been changed. Likewise, I can't nominate Australia's Amaroo Park as it is now a housing estate. I don't know what the state of Riverside is, but I can't see defunct circuits getting many votes.

I think there is an outlet mall on the site of the old Riverside raceway. Either that or houses. Was a nice track back in the day...

I need to pay more attention to the rules

My nominations:

Darlington
Long Beach
Martinsville
- No track in the world is tougher on brakes than the one in Martinsville Virginia
Michigan International Speedway
Talladega

Just so everybody knows - I forgot to include this in the opening post - I'm looking to make the poll on Tuesday, even if nominations drop off the way they have been (but every other country gets a week of nomination, so this is fair).

Alright, that's it. I'm going to close nominations for America and open them for Canada. You have one week to nominate racing circuits from the country that gave us Nathan Fillion and Gilles Villeneuve.

I'll do the poll when I have a little time later. Right now I've got to run as I've got a two-hour lecture very shortly.

Mont Tremblant
Circuit Gilles Villenueve

Unless anyone wants to nominate the street circuits I guess that takes care of it. :P
