Then and Now

As we all know GT4 has been out for what seems ages. Instead of digging up an old thread that is somewhat similar thought I would start from scratch.

Out of curiosity what controller did you start with when you first got GT4, and what are you currently using. Has your current controller type helped, hurt, or no difference from the beginning.

Myself personally I've only ever used the standard Dual Shock that came with the PS2.
I've only don everything I could to get used to how the pressure sensitivity works for acceleration, turning, and braking control. Over the years I have altered my driving to try and be as smooth yet fast as possible. :)

Well, I use the DS2, too, as you said, which came together with the PS2.. I'm using it up to now and I think I won't buy it for playing GT4, but for playing GT5:P and GT5.. About the pressure sensitivity.. I know the DS2 perfectly and always know how much to press any button.. ;)..

Best wishes,

First for about half a year a well worn DS2 that had seen me through the second half of GT2 and GT3, then a brand new DS2 - the one that had come with the PS2 - for another half a year. Then briefly a Logitech Cordless Action (an excellent alternative to the DS2) before getting a DFP which I used for roughly a year and a half. Finally upgraded to the G25 last summer and I don't see it being phased out anytime soon.

Getting used to the wheel after some eight years of pad driving took some serious effort but in the end it was definitely worth it, I was good with the pad but certainly better still with the wheel.

So.. Do you know how much a G25 cost now? And how much time did you invested into learn driving with the wheel?

The price of the G25 here? 299€ in the store, around 225€ from the web. The time... well, the standards I wanted to reach again were high but two months isn't far off the mark. More or less daily playing.

I'd like to know what a DFP is. Sorry I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to the various types of game pads, controllers, and wheels are. :dunce:

DFP = Driving Force Pro

It was the wheel of choice before the G25 came on the market (I got through two of them (just wore them out) but the G25 is made of sterner stuff :D).

DS2 since gt2, still several small inputs for steering, and im usually full on/off accel/brake. I havent experiemented too much without traction controls, so there isnt much need to fiddle with the pressure sensitivity stuff. I can manipulate if need be though, and im starting to tune without it so it should be fun.

I just use the standard DS2 with both analogue sticks for pressure sensitivity...

Since the very beginning of my Gran Turismo 4 playing days, I have been using the DualShock2. I only play with the D-Pad, the analogue sticks seem impossible :ouch: I wish I had a steering wheel... Once I'm twenty or so, I will get a fine job and collect as much money as possible :D Then I will plan to buy one; that is, if I can :(
But in the end, two years have passed since I got GT4, unlike others who have been playing for five years or so. And I've got to say, that I'm pretty confident with the development of my "skills". Forty seconds in mission IA - 15 are sure something to be proud of!

Then I'm going to buy one in the store.. I like to pay a little bit more for a new one than buying one from the web.. 👍

Oooh :(.. Don't worry you can :) I don't play with the analogue sticks, too.. The buttons seem to be better for me :P

I decided to hold off on buying GT4 when i got my PS2, only because I couldn't get a steering wheel with it at the time. A bit later, I got a copy of GT4 with a DFP, and that's all I've ever used. (All the other GT's, I used a DS/DS2, depending on the game.)

I'm currently using a DS2 as I have with all GT games apart from 1, where I used the PS1 controller without the sticks. With my recent purchase of GT4 I was actually thinking of picking up a G25, but I'm not entirely sold on the idea yet. It is a lot of money, after all.

Believe it or not, my first console game was GT4, and I got it some time in 2007, so I'm relatively new to this stuff. Having never played a game where the only possible controls are the buttons, I immediately chose the analog sticks and haven't changed since. I don't know that they're better, and in fact I think that the best DS2 drivers use the buttons, but I'll never be able to switch over because the stick movements are so ingrained.

I thought I should point out that using the analogue sticks for steering and throttle will limit what you can do in terms of pressing brake and throttle at the same time. For instance, driving the Nurburgring or any very bumpy track in a high speed race car, surely you need to sometimes have brake and throttle at the same time in order to steady the car? Lifting off is no good, you will spin into the wall. Without any driving aids the car will be very unsteady. Even with TC set to 1 but no stability management, you would have a similar problem I think.

Yes, I think that's the biggest limitation of the analog sticks. I have never found it strictly necessary to "left-foot brake," I guess because I've just altered my driving to get around the stability problem when it arises. It's actually not as bad as you might think, and I have driven LMPs and Group Cs around Nurburgring. I never use ASM, and rarely TCS.

I was a ds2 user and a general racer a few years ago but ive become mroe addicted as ive got older(19 now) I got myself a g25.but still after a playseat for the right price!!

I find that I can't go as fast through the bumpy, 100mph+ sections of the Nurburgring without using the left foot braking, in a stock Sauber C9. I don't know if I would have been able to beat the F1 cars in that race in the F1 championship without this technique. However good you are at driving around it, it certainly does penalise you, at least in my opinion. I actually have throttle set on R1 on the DS2 and brake on L1, the shoulder buttons. Steering is with the d-pad. Shifting is with the usual buttons. It takes some time to get used to, but I found it was better in the end, and less tiring, more ergonomic.

My first PS console was my PS2 with GT4 game just over three years ago. I have always used the DS2 controller
(I do not use the sticks, Except for the 240mph Licence test. I used accel stick to stop wheel spin then went back to the button).
However I do have a wheel (The cheaper of the DF wheels) and I must say I suck with the wheel.
After trying with it for approx 2 weeks, I went back to the DS2 controller.

Now I have Max Points, All Gold and just about every car. I might break out the Wheel again and give it another go.

I've been a dual-shock man since my GT1 days and remain so now.

I bought and briefly tried using a wheel for GT3, but couldn't get the hang of it. I kept losing control even at the simplest track: Super Speedway! I was driving worse than I was in my noobiest noob days! :dunce: So I sold it.

To be fair, it was a cheaper, Mad Katz wheel (rather than a top-notch wheel which costs half my dang paycheck!)
