The black FourTwo Smart car was spotted weaving in and out of traffic on a busy highway in Houston before being approached by a state trooper at a set of traffic lights.
Reported by Fox News as Smart car, dumb move, the driver David Wheaton punched the officer. Yes, that's dumb, but it gets worse.
The officer had noticed a boozy smell and vacant expression, just before Wheaten took a swing. The little car took off, back along the highway.
The chase was on. A moderate chase, that is. Smart cars are better known for their environmental credentials than horsepower.
In contrast to most police pursuits on US TV, some viewers took to Twitter to complain it was boring. Others described it as adorable. In this report the Fox news anchor settles for "medium speed".
Wheaten managed to avoid a roadblock but was otherwise law-abiding, diligently using his indicators and even stopping at a red light until it changed.
Even if it had been a high-speed pursuit, the police would have caught up with him eventually.
Astoundingly, Wheaten drove straight to his home suburb, down his own street and pulled up in his own driveway - five police cars following behind.
