Recently my ps2 has not been reading, very mad,and knowing my warranty was void,i took the top off,and looked beneath the laser, the material which has the circuit in it,cracked, due to-well i dont know.Anyone got a spare ps2 laser???

You most likely have a disc read error. its common with launch date era systems.

Call sony and tell them that you have a disc read error, and they should fix it, no charge.

If you have taken apart the PS2, SONY will not fix it. There are many who can fix it or you can buy a new laser for like $70.00. i just sold a V7 laser so I am out! If you cant fix the PS2, Ill buy it.;)

The same thing has happened to 2 of my friends.

The ***** just broke for no reason!!!

he has to pay $240(nz) TO REPAIR IT.

I think that Sony are commiting a crime by making a product and having it break 2 weeks after the warranty goes void.

And when your 15 $240 dont come around very easily;)

At what version of the PS2 does the FATAL disc read error stop occuring. I'm just asking cuz the first one I had (I gave it to my younger brother before he went away to college) starting having this problem, and luckily he was able to trade it in for new one, but now we both have PS2s that are less than 6 months old, and we want to know if in a year and a half from now if we can expect the disc read error to show its ugly head again.

Moving on, IceGT, the disc read error are mostly contained in the launch date era systems. If you bought it after christmas season 2000, then you are good to go.

Fair warning, mate.

*God Bless* FHM is the best, I reckon. I first started reading it when Meike Buchan was the cover girl - that's my first issue.

Have you got the one with the diary?

I wouldn't say that, Christmas 02 I went throught 4 PS2's before finally getting a good unit in January 03... Defective hard drives, an smart money was spent on the extended warranty, goes out/an will... get a new replacement ... best $40 ever spent...

I bought my PS2 on release day (12:01 AM, to be exact). I've always had the disc read problem with DVDs, but only with some. This seems to be temporarily solved by cleaning the laser lens with alcohol. GT3 sometimes takes 20 or more reboots to actually load... :(

Hmmm, Ive never had a problem with my unit.
1.5 years and counting.
Heh, its been used extensively for many games and days worth of playing. ;)

I've had mine since September 2001 and the only problem (if you can call it a problem) is that the drives makes a clicking sound when I put GT3 in the drive. It's probably just because I have worn out the GT3 disk and it's my most played game on PS2. :D
