QUESTION:

Sometimes there are parts of the track where you just barely have time to upshift right before you have to downshift again.

In other words, you are heading to a corner that you take in third gear, but just a little little bit before you get there, your RPM are high enough that you can shift up to 4th, but then you will have to shift back down in like 2 seconds.

My question is, in general, should you try to stay in a lower gear and don’t bother shifting up, or should you try to take the opportunity to upshift when you can?

I know there are a ton of variables like car and track etc but I’m just asking as like a general rule of thumb.
As you note it is car dependent, but in general, stay in the lower gear unless you hit the limiter.

Hopefully others will chime in, but it all depends on the car and track. The easiest way to see what you probably should do is watch one of the faster replays and see what they're doing.

If you're trying to figure it out yourself, I'd say experiment and see what ends up faster for you.

Take the Radical, for example, during the TT we had there some months back. There were a few straights that you'd benefit from a double up shift as the gearing was very close and even in the higher gear the car would still pull very well in the higher gear. Or more recently, the Watkins Glen Gr.4 TT, the back straight before the bus-stop chicane, in a Cayman GT4 you would lose speed if you upshift to 6th as the track is slightly uphill and now were out of power band in the lower RPM. In this case, you would want to stay in 5th up to the chicane. Other cars like the Jaguar had the power to continue to pull in the higher gear.

Thanks.

Side question, when going down a hill do you upshift sooner since gravity is helping out the engine?
In general, I'd say yes. But I don't think you'd need to upshift earlier on the RPM's, it's just since gravity is helping you accelerate faster, you're going to get to the optimal RPM to up shift sooner than you would on a flat terrain.

After more than one hour on Lake Maggiore, I've improved my PB from 0:52.371 to 0:52.350... :boggled: with Miss Godzilla GT-R 🥰

Long and hard is the road to the gold medal...:guilty:

EDIT: new PB at 0:52.270 (optimal at 0:52.211...)
1st sector: 17.584
2nd sector: 34.686

My objective is still a 0:51.xxx score for a secured gold medal.

Hi,

I really do like Lago Maggiore in any format. It seems to suit my driving style - For style read: A bag of spanners rolling down a hillside!!! That said, I have just cracked a 51:8xx in the Porsche so I am pleased to say the least!!! :-)

A big big thank you to Mistah_MCA for a very very helpful lap guide - Again!!!

Another big big thank you to Half_sourly for all the hard work that brings so much to these forums!

Best regards to all here.

Ian.

@half_sourly.... Wheel user here. :)

Finally golded the BBTT . I was definitely breaking too little in the last corner and too much in the second last

In Lago Maggiore I have still to figure out lot of things, preferred car too.
I started with Porsche, but I don't feel it.
I moved then to Supra, I was happy for the very first time with it, going in silver territory.
Then I moved to Aston just to realize that I'm instantly quicker (aka I suck with Supra, as expected).
I'm sitting now at 52.88 with more doubts then certainty

Interesting pair of TTs...

...and perhaps no better example of a TT that favours wheel users and one that doesn't.

The first one at BB is so much easier with the wheel, as one might expect. The other, at Lago Maggiore, seems to be pretty even in terms of controller v wheel for me; I got my best time with the wheel, but only improved on my controller time by a couple of tenths... the BB TT was like day and night.

I've hopefully got a solid silver for LM, but may need to improve a bit at BB to hold on to a silver there. Gold is possible at LM for me (for now) but I don't like the BB TT enough to waste too many more laps on it to reach gold.

Agreed.

The biggest difference is the speed on the banked corners, plus it's a "slow" road car which makes use of the wheel's "powerslide". I try to induce understeer for the fast turn 2 and on the final slow corner and I just can't get the car to rotate. 32.124 is the best I've done so far after about 180km driven on it.

2nd TT looks promising though. Gr.3 with RM tyres and only 1 corner where the wheel has an inherent advantage (final banked turn). Did a 51.664 after only 3 laps... Will try to get to a 50s time next weekend.

I can see why the Supra is used by more people in the new TT; shaved around 3 tens off my 911 time.
That’s exactly why I’m avoiding using it for awhile. Decided to see what I could do with a car nowhere near the top. Had to scroll seven pages to see the first RCZ so it was the winner.
Plus, I got to give it a fancy French livery.
.13 seconds off so far but I’ll put some time into it and see where I end up before giving in and trying the meta. Optimals in the 51.4’s so the time is there.

I've been switching between the Supra and the 911 at Lago Maggiore and keep getting slightly faster lap times in the 911 even though I'm sure the Supra is ultimately faster. Driving the 911 feels so effortless vs the Supra and the view in VR is better. The Supra has more potential but it's also more difficult to get just right. PB 0:51.024 (in the 911).

I got angry at the quality of driving I encountered in the daily races today so I headed back to BB for a bit of solitude. I don't know how many laps I did inching down my time before it felt like my head might explode after going round in circles so many time but I dropped my time to a sub +1.5%.

I'm still losing my time in the last corner. I can see my ghost on top of a top 5 ghost for the majority of the lap, but that last corner is where I lose it..

Had a couple of quick goes at Lago earlier in the week but has taken some time to figure the track out. Probably around 60 laps in total across 4 or 5 different cars… ultimately settled on my trusty 911 for now and got down to 51.811 which hopefully will hold for gold. Would like to be quicker (obviously) but you guys are already several tenths up on me!

If I get anymore seat time this weekend I’ll psych myself up for another run in the 917K before the event closes tomorrow night. 😬
