Time trial - What exactly invalidates a lap?

I have spent half of my saturday afternoon perfecting my time trial in a Nissan Skyline Coupe 370GT '07 on High Speed Ring. However, at the last turn before entering the straight I have noticed that the game has a rather funny tolerance when it comes to hitting the safety barrier. At most time my laps are invalidated when accidentally hitting the barrier but at other times the game seems to accept it. Something to do with the how hard the impact is?

The main promblem now is that my best lap in this car on this track involves contact with that particular safety barrier. For some reason, the lap was not invalidated and to make things worse, the barrier helped my Nissan to get the grip it needed to gain great speed for the straight. So now I struggle to get through this turn while beating my ghost car which seems to be aided by that barrier. I don't ask for advice how to deal with this but why doesn't the game invalidate any contact with such "helpful" barriers? It really makes the definition of a perfect lap somewhat blurry but the lack of mechanical damage on the cars also play a role.

It's the impact of the collision along with how it affects your corner speed. Also, if you cut corners enough, you also get an invalidated lap.

Yes, something to do with the impact, but if you look closely at your replay (if you still have it) you will notice that in fact you're not touching the real wall, but an invisible wall close to the real one.

Thanks for your replies. I will try to check the replay I saved about that invisible wall. Still, I think that any barrier contact, invisible or not should not be permitted in time trials since there is no car damage. As far as I can tell, it gave my car a boost of speed rather than a speed reduction.

I hate how it invalidates my next lap after I have an off between turn 14 and 15 at Fuji. I don't see how that would affect my next lap time since you still have to slow down for the final hairpin.

I totally agree that drives me insane
