Here is my assumptions and results on tires ...

soft tires = quick lap times and good grip.

harder tires = endurance tires

everything inbetween and the difference between sports, racing, and stard i have no clue. what are all the differences of the tires? ALSO, win (if ever) do you put different tires on the front than the back for a race?

dirt and snow i think are pretty duh.

Ok, Standard tires are like the kind you have on you car that you dirve to work everyday. They dont realy have alot of grip, but they do have a very long wear life. They have deep ridges to wick away water (small surface contact with the road = less grip) and are tall with large sidewalls (which flex, thus making them more prone to loose grip if you take corners at high speeds). Sports tires are the kind you put on ur car when u take it to the local track. They have less groves, which puts more rubber to the road, making them grip better. They also have small sidewalls so they dont flex as easy as standar tires, making them better for high speed cornering. On the downside, the rubber they are made out of is a softer compound than standard tires, so they dont last as long. Racing tires (slicks) have no groves, allowing maximun surface contact. They generaly generate oustanding grip that will last even when cornering at high speeds. But, they are even softer than sports tires so dont last very long (2-5 laps max for medium compound).

O, and to answer when to fit diffrent softness tires to front/back, you have to just see what side of your car wears out first, and just fit a harder compound of that side. I would not do this though unless the race would require you to pit.

ok ... yeah ... i've been doing some testing ... the super softs give me killer speed buy they are worn dead in like 3 laps! and the super hards last 10x longer but slow me down too much.

You may find this interesting, its a series of tests I did to look at the lap time differences between various tyre types.
