Hi,

I am planning on having some friends over and trying to replicate some of the top gear challenges in GT 5. Here are some challenges that could be done relatively easily with a few friends. Thanks to those contributing ideas.

  1. Double decker racing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5xd97HeY70) - using a driving wheel give one person the steering wheel and another the pedals. If two driving wheels are available, have four people race in split screen.
  2. Blind lap of the TG test track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbiYtg5geoo) - blindfold the driver and a co-driver gives directions.
  3. Beat a Mitsubishi EVO with a Renault Avantime - already discussed here
    and here.
  4. Beat the stig's lap time matching car. Find a car on the power lap time list that is represented in game and try and beat the stig's time with it. Note that all power lap times are from a standing start.
  5. Beat the stig's lap time mis-matched cars. Find a car on the power lap time list and use it as a bench mark. Choose a car or cars and try to beat the stig's time with those cars. Eg try to beat the stig's time in a Ford Focus using a Ferrari 512BB '76.
  6. Beat Jeremy Clarkson's 9:59 time on the Nurburgring with the Jaguar S-TYPE R '02. For more challenge beat Sabine's 9:12 time. Note on the show the Jaguar was a diesel and the lap was timed from the bridge at Antoniusbusche, to the Audi bridge at the start of Dottinger.
  7. Create your own Power Laps board for all your friends/family. Pick a reasonable FF car that's completely stock and have everybody that comes to your house take 5-10 practice laps around the Top Gear track, then do a timed lap and see how they stack up against all your other visitors.
  8. Used car challenges. Set your group a budget, then buy a used car and use any credit left over to mod it, each of your group doing the same, then have some challenges like highest top speed, best drift and best lap times.
  9. Lambo vs Evo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AMIoQUCEvY). A two player race with a Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 '09 vs a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. Suggestion use comfort grade tyres.
  10. Two car races on the Top Gear test track see here for suggested pairings.

Can anyone think of other top gear challenges that would be fun and can be replicated in game without too much effort?

There's currently one challenge going on where someone has challenged everyone to tune a Renault Avantime (can't spell it, the people carrier) within a certain budget, to lap the top gear track in the same time as what Clarkson and co did on top gear (with the stig driving of course)..

That's number 3 in the OP...

Highlandor, don't worry about it. If you think of anything else, let us know.

Sorry dude, I was doing a B Spec race, munching on some choccy biscuits and trying to answer a thread at the same time...

Multi tasking is not my strong point :(

(oops - double post, apologies if the moderators see this)

There is a few Jaguars in the game (Used car dealership) - you could try and break the 10 minute barrier around the ring..??

If not the 10:00 minute barrier, try Sabine's time, I think that was about 9 minutes or so, but not sure..??

I think that might be too easy though as many of them are the performance versions. I never bought one so I can't tell you what they're like.

I don't think there's any Ford Transits in this game though...

This is the kind of thing the Top Gear challenges should have been. It makes me wonder if PD even watched the show before chucking the track in the game.

Other challenges I could suggest:

Laguna Seca: Obviously you can't go for real, so one person sets a lap time, the best they can do in say 3 laps. The next guy has to match or beat it, but this time a few of you are sat round, and if he has any offs, bumps or spins, he gets a punch on the arm or leg. This should add the fear factor.

Bugatti Challenge: This one is gonna need a PC and a MS Flight Sim. Basically work out the number of miles it was between Northern Italy and London, then the Bugatti has to do this many round the Nurburgring before the guy on the sim can load up the PC, load the game and fly it.

Yeah, plenty of room for improvement in the Top Gear challenges and thanks for the suggestions. The Flight Sim idea is interesting. There are so many challenges on Top Gear where someone drives while another person does something completely different. Most of them don't work in the home (running a marathon, climbing a mountain, and so on) but playing a game of another type could.

Does anyone know if someone has compiled a list of cars that have a power lap time and are in GT 5?

For challenge No. 6, what car should we used to represent the Jaguar S-TYPE R '02 diesel?

I've tried this car in GT4, it is not that hard to beat Jeremy's record.

1 point i would like to make is that the top gear power challenge times should be recorded from a standing start not a flying start.

That was the S-Type R, much quicker car.

The deisel Clarkson used had 206bhp and was 1,722kg. Any suggestions for something similar any one?

I like that one! :dopey:

The closest car I can think of is the Alfa Romeo 166; just under 200bhp but with a kerbweight of around 1500kg, however being FWD should make this an interesting car for the challenge. Failing that you could always use the Citroen C5 V6, similar spec but not exactly an S-Type competitor.

I have a couple ideas.

If you have the ability to do 2 players (or it could be done online with only 2 people) you could do the Lambo vs. Evo test. On the Top Gear Test Track, one person starts in a Lamborghini (I forget which model) and the other person starts behind them in a Mitsubishi Evo and tries to catch/pass the Lambo. Of course to be totally realistic, the Lambo would have to spin out due to overwhelming pressure from the Evo. :)

The other idea is to create your own Power Laps board for all your friends/family. Pick a reasonable FF car that's completely stock and have everybody that comes to your house take 5-10 practice laps around the Top Gear track, then do a timed lap and see how they stack up against all your other visitors! I actually really like this idea and will probably institute it the next time I have company!

Used car challenges would be cool as well. Set your group a budget, then buy a used car and use any credit left over to mod it, each of your group doing the same, then have some challenges like highest top speed, best drift and best lap times.

+1 - thats a brilliant idea, i have to get some magnetic stripes + board to get a realistic simulation of this ;-)

+2 What if grandma beats your best time. Are you then going to put a "WW" next to your name? Too bad no weather on this track. It rains on at least 25% of the episodes.

i've had a leader board going for a few weeks now and it's been a real hit. the way i have set it up is as follows,

car - suzuki swift.
tyres - comfort hard.
no other mods.
did oil change before first time recorded, no more oil change until oil light comes on.
maximum of 5 practice laps.
restart timetrial for actual recorded lap.

to increase longevity you can try to upgrade your time once per day

at first i thought "am i a little bit obsessed" but it is a great challenge and my mates keep coming back for more and even a couple of chicks have their names on the board:sly:

highly recomended

Remember that wasn't a full lap. IIRC they timed it from the bridge at Antoniusbusche, to the Audi bridge at the start of Dottinger hohe.

Yeah, good pont. Completely forgot the starting points for real life laps and GT5 laps are different, plus in real life laps are affected by the need to slow down progressively to go back into the ''pits'' (don't know what you call them, where everyone waits and hangs out until it's their turn to do a lap). Whereas on GT5 you would be 'flat out' all the way along that straight.

EDIT:

Just had a thought, I think this (the slowing down) happens after the point Daan mentions(??). Ooops.

Thanks for the feedback. I have amended the notes to include those details. It also just struck me that the Top Gear times are both affected by the presence of other cars on the track which won't be the case in a GT 5 time trial. It seems maybe this isn't a good challenge to replicate if you want to be precise about it.
