Many of us have fast cars, but what's the point? There seems to be almost no places to actually run cars anywhere near their top speed.

I would really like to take the Mustang I have up to it's limited 118 MPH. LEGALLY. But I'm stumped. Drag strips won't work. Too short. I don't want to actually be racing either. Should I look for abandoned airfields? Ask a small private airport if I can borrow theirs?

I live near Dallas, Texas, if that helps.

Any response is appreciated.

Probably won't hit your top speed in a mile though. Fastest I've had my Mustang was somewhere between 140-145. I was entering a highway that was just opened (within minutes) of construction/resurfacing.

Most places that allow you to run big speeds like that will require you to have certain safety features before they allow you to break certain speed marks.

Maybe you should plan a trip out to the Salt Flats. :)

Don't go to the salt flats unless you want your car to rust through mid-run.

A mile really isn't enough, it took my friend 3 miles just to get to 105 in his Kia.

A 1.5 mile oval should work but I can't see them letting a stock car out there.

I've heard parts of Montana have no speed limits, but you probably won't want to drive that far just for a top speed run.

A stock Mustang will crumple like a soda can if something goes wrong and it hits a wall at 100mph, unless it's a purpose built race car I can't see them letting it on a big track like that.

Montana no longer has any roads with no speed limits, this changed in the late 90's I believe. I'm pretty sure the highest speed limits in the country is that stretch in Texas where it's 85mph. And from what I've heard, it's a heavily patrolled road.

Another thing worth mentioning. Your car is limited to 118mph for a reason. You tires, driveshaft, and brakes are all probably not rated to handle speeds faster than that. I know of a few V6 Mustang owners who had driveshafts explode on them when removing the speed limiters and exceeding the rated speed for the driveshaft. Checking the speed rating on your tires goes without saying. And the stock brakes will quickly overheat if you need to decelerate quickly from that speed.

I just thought it was funny how you said stock cars wouldn't be allowed when those circuits are built for NASCAR, which calls itself stock car racing.

Dallas has quite a few places to do this. The problem is if you either

A) Need a ridiculously fast car or
B) Know the right people.

We are in talks with Addison airport to try a charity event but it's extremely early and won't be til next spring.
