When people bring up the Toyota Celica in competition, many tend to instantly recall the car's career in Rallying. That chapter started in 1972 when Toyota, under the name "Toyota Team Andersson" with Driver Ove Andersson, campaigned the 1600 GTV model in the 1972 RAC Rally. Toyota had first began developing the TA22 Celica 1600 GT for competition use soon after the Celica line was introduced. After inviting Andersson to compete in the RAC Rally, a car was built and prepared in Japan, then sent to Europe. After many attempts ending in DNFs with the Corolla used previously, the car finished first in class and ninth overall. It would be this result that would spawn Toyota to ramp up efforts from only doing a single race to competing in WRC.

The addition of this car would add not just another classic rally car, it would add the car that began the Celica's long career in WRC.
