I can already imagine that this new FT-4X will be the domain of soccer moms and strip malls, like the FJ Cruiser was.

I'm guessing the name is a hint as to what this will preview: the next 4Runner. It's due for a replacement any day now.

Though, those tires seem really narrow for that, or a reborn FJ Cruiser, unless it's closer in size/spirit to the original FJ40.

It looks like some sort of Kia Soul / Nissan Cube concept car. Not really feelin it Toyota! The current one is much better looking and a much better homage.

It does not know what it wants to be.

Definitely better than an Aztek, but... you know? It looks like a capsule in the back. If the rear extended like an RV and became a tent/bed area, that would be cool. It's all over the place.

Assuming it hits production, it explains the gap in the HR-C lineup going without an AWD option in the US. If they can outdo the Renegade on fuel economy and reliability, that'd be a massive selling point.

The door handles look like drink bottles, the centre infotainment looks like a boom box, the instrument panel is a phone and the glovebox looks like a game console. Imagine if all those items are removable.

I don't hate it, anyone who thought it was going to be a new generation FJ was dreaming and it's funny to see how many Toyota people are angry over it. If it makes money for the company, I can't really fault them.

The door handles look like drink bottles, the centre infotainment looks like a boom box, the instrument panel is a phone and the glovebox looks like a game console. Imagine if all those items are removable.

The door handles are water bottle and the center infotainment is a boombox. And yes, they're removable.

I think it would look better in a different color combo. The interior is a bit of a mess regardless of color though.

As a side note, I'd hate to see the bill if that rear door(s?) ever needs replacing. :scared:

Oh snap.

Toyota's Californian studio designed the chunky-looking crossover from back to front, starting with an ingenious "Multi Hatch" split tailgate that can open horizontally or vertically, encouraging people to use the rear of the car in social settings.

Clever touches include storage compartments that can cool or heat knick-knacks (to dry damp clothes), interior lights that can be removed to function as torches and a removable North Face armrest cover that doubles as a sleeping bag.

The armrest itself is a removable cargo box, the door handles also work as water bottles, there is a GoPro camera mounted within an external rear view mirror and a dock for the driver's smartphone to take advantage of music and mapping apps.

Interestingly, Toyota reckons the smartphone-savvy "swipe right" generation are more likely to appreciate the tactility of mechanical knobs, dials and levers throughout the cabin, so it resisted the modern temptation to put capacitive-touch switches throughout the interior.
