Earlier this day I was nailing some 150 pt. races in the Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Concept '88 (with no modifications of any kind, and no ASM/TCS of course), and decided to see what this car could really do.

About the car
The car is a concept version of the Camaro, fabricated by Chevrolet, called IROC-Z. It's from year 1988, and so it looks. It's a beautiful 80's in my opinion. Its engine's got around 230 bhp, which it spits out at the rear wheels.

I wanted to do an evaluation of the cars driving capabilities, so here's how that went:

First of all, a speed test. So off I went to the test track. I first got the result 243,38 km/h, but I wanted to see what the gears would allow for, so I did a second test. For this one I slapped on a supercharger, just for the kicks. Now it went almost all the way, and that's 260,65 km/h. And the accelleration was a whole lot better.

In either way though, it seems to have a bit troubles squeezing out the last couple of km/h, but the car seems to have a low powerband too. Also the rev limiter is at 5000 rpm.

Second, the handling test. It is common knowledge that the nürburgring will push any car to its absolute limits, and often a bit further, so thus I choose this track.

And take note that I did use the supercharger for this one too, just to have it go a little faster.

So I started racing. I was once again amazed (like I had been in the races a mentioned to begin with) by it's smooth handling. It's not the kind of car that needs low speeds to turn, it just seems to go where you want it to - and if it starts to spin out, then that's okay, cause it's really stable and fun to drift.

The only time you don't wanna turn too tight, is when you near maximum speed, as it likes to skid out - but just turn smooth, and it will behave.

I only did one lap, and though it was clean most of the time, I spun out a couple of times. Staying off the grass isn't really that hard, but it can be tough to get off it, and onto the road again. At least without spinning out. My lap time was 8'30.

So for a quick resume: Very stable, very smooth, but stay off the grass. But then again, you shouldn't be getting on the grass in the first place. Speed is okay, for its class, and I've been able to outrace a viper (not on the straights, but in the turns) easily. What's not to love?

I was pretty happy when I obtained this car. I knew it was going to be a fun drive from my experience with the 2000 Camaro SS but when I saw its little power outage I was somewhat dissapointed. However, these feelings were reversed when I tested the car. I drove a pretty clean lap around the 'ring at 8'28.xxx and was suprised at how well it held the road. With a weight of 3230lbs, its not the lightest car but it is still lighter than many cars in its class.

Anyways, good write up. You should try tuning the car more than just a supercharger. Weight reduction would benefit it a whole lot along with a mild suspension setting but other than those suggestions, have fun with this car. Im sure you can create a really MEAN drift Camaro out of this.

I just gave mine a spin around El Captain a few days ago. Not the quickest car for it's power, but fun to drive.
It sounds really strange at lower RPMs though, do they really sound like that or is it just GT sucking at exhaust notes again?

Can't tell, cause guess what just happened? I turn on the playstation, and the GT4 data is corrupted. I guess I'll have to start over then :(

Dang, that totally blows man. Sorry to hear that. If you are able, make a copy on another memory card next time.

Yeah, I was thinking of buying an extra earlier that day, so it's kinda ironic that it happened the first day I think about buying one.. But I'll just have to do it over again I guess.

And as for where to obtain the car, search for "prize cars" or something, there's a list somewhere on the board.

I can't seem to find the thread with the prize cars in it. Could someone give me a link or just tell me how you can get it?

Thanks.

Sure, here: FAQ list... As the name says, it's a list of FAQS - very useful. And it also has the prize car list :) pal, ntsc and japanese version.

Funny that I find this thread as I'm driving this ugly beast for the first time around laguna seca. The normal version looks slightly better... We used to have one when I was young.

I dont like how nearly all V8 american cars sound supercharged when they arent... But the exhaust tone is right.

The hadnling seems to be ok... I've bought a full race suspension. It needs to be even lighter which I will soon take care of and I think it could use a little more top end. A chip and a head porting should do it just fine...

You win the car in the all camaro manufacturer race. there are 3 quick races and then its yours.

I was really pleasantly surprised by how it drove (in standard trim, electronic Big Brothers turned off) at Infineon. Nicely adjustable oversteer available, and a reasonably grunty engine. I also like this look, though my favourite was the late '60s coke bottle Camaros. Pity I can't get one in the game without a fat white skunk stripe down the middle.

Another pleasant American surprise for me was the Prowler, which has got to be one of the best out-of-the-box FR drift cars in the game, surely? It has horribly tall gearing but you just dial in an angle with your right foot and drive through the corner. Makes even the '88 Camaro feel sloppy.

EDIT: Oh, and the Corvette Grand Sport is pretty handy on opposite lock too.
