Winner: rastab97. Congratulations!

Special thanks to noobie 4 ever, Dark Elite, and Sonzilla for judging this week. :cheers:

noobie 4 ever's Ratings:

Turn-in (entry to corners) Tuner:embarrassed:pendriver19a
Ranking (1-10): 9

Mid-Corner response (whether the car under/oversteers mid-corner or holds the racing line well)
Ranking (1-10): 6

Corner exit (how quickly you can exit a corner whilst staying in good control)
Ranking (1-10): 8

Stability (rear end staying in line, car not 'jumping' or feeling skittish in turns)
Ranking (1-10): 9

Grip (start-offs, how much power can be used without the drive wheels losing traction? Does the car oversteer excessively?)
Ranking (1-10): 8

High-speed controllability (whether the car becomes 'frantic' and turns far too sharply at high speeds)
Ranking (1-10): 9

Handling while braking (are you able to easily turn the car while braking, and without going into oversteer?)
Ranking (1-10): 8

Acceleration (how good is it? Is there a lot of traction while doing it?)
Ranking (1-10): 9

Total Combined Ranking: 66

Final Thoughts:
A victim of understeer, maybe due to the S2 tyres, which understeered highly at speed. Other than that everything else was good. The gearing was good the turn in was fine everything was good. A very good setup in my opinion.

This car felt out of its place on the track. It understeered more than the other two setups and I must have driven off in the same corner 6 times. The acceleration was good but that’s really all I can think about that’s good about this setup. I also didn't know what suspension to put on the car as he forgot to mention what kind to -5

This car handles like it’s on rails. This car is probably the best handling car of the bunch. Virtually no understeer. In my opioin this is my winner. The only downside is than he forgot to mention a wing and lost 5 points

TUNER: opendriver19a

194bhp ///175ft/lb

Turn-in = 7. Doesn’t feel like it wants to turn in.

Mid-Corner Response = 7. It pushes wide when the throttle’s opened, typical FWD exaggerated by the traction control.

Corner exit = 7. Provided none of the wheels touch grass, exit isn’t too bad.

Stability = 8. No problems.

Grip = 9. Pretty much unassailable due to the traction control.

High-speed controllability = 8. No high speeds to speak of.

Handling while braking = 7. Sometimes pushes wide, but the brakes are effective enough.

Acceleration = 5. Using only four of six available gears, acceleration is sometimes sluggish.

Total = 58/80

Final Comments
‘Exciting’ is not an applicable word to this setup, but what can one expect. The extra 90bhp seems to have evaporated somewhere between the flywheel and the front wheels, and only using four of six gears seems a little inadvisable – it makes this car accelerate even slower than it might otherwise. The traction control, too, doesn’t feel required – all it does in increase the FWD-feel in corners of being unable to turn and accelerate at the same time. The AIDS-light is always flashing in corners, and it needn’t be. Apart from this, a decent setup.

______________________________________________________

TUNER: =V8 Power=

203bhp ///184ft/lb

Turn-in = 7. The downforce helps turning in, but still reluctant.

Mid-Corner Response = 7. Even full downforce can’t get rid of the FWD inability to use power, emphasised by the traction control.

Corner exit = 7. Occasionally wide, but otherwise OK.

Stability = 8. No problems.

Grip = 9. Pretty much unassailable due to the traction control.

High-speed controllability = 8. No high speeds to speak of.

Handling while braking = 7. Sometimes pushes wide, but the brakes are effective enough.

Acceleration = 5. Accelerates smoothly, although not in corners, but top speed is limited by close gears.

Total = 58/80

Final Comments
‘Exciting’ is not an applicable word to this setup, but what can one expect. The very close gears are not the wisest choice, bringing too many shifts and hitting the rev limiter three times every lap at only 109mph. The traction control is totally unnecessary with full downforce, only serving to cut away the precious little mid-corner acceleration. The unusually soft suspension setup seems to be no different from any others. The differential could have been customised.

______________________________________________________

TUNER: TS

197bhp ///175ft/lb

Turn-in = 8. The double front downforce bias helps turn-in slightly.

Mid-Corner Response = 8. Again the downforce setup is useful, lessening the dead feeling mid-corner.

Corner exit = 7. Occasionally wide, but otherwise OK.

Stability = 8. No problems, aside from occasional traction slips.

Grip = 7. Once moving, the only real traction loss is uphill in Turn 2, but start-offs can be tricky.

High-speed controllability = 8. No high speeds to speak of.

Handling while braking = 7. The brakes are fairly powerful, but cut off handling response.

Acceleration = 5. Useless stock gears make this car utilise only 3 of a possible 6 ratios here, making it impossible to keep the engine in the powerband.

Projected Total = 58/80
-5 points for stock gears
Total = 53/80

Final Comments
An incredibly dull car such as this really needs some sort of modification to the exhaust system, to improve the acoustics if nothing else. It is a shame that this setup is retarded by the standard gearing setup, which is inexcusable – it means this limited engine is held outside its powerband for even longer, thus killing off acceleration. 5 points have been deducted for this.

TUNER: rastab97

191bhp ///163ft/lb
Adjustable-downforce aeroparts not specified – downforce settings ignored on test

Turn-in = 7. Not too bad for a non-winged car.

Mid-Corner Response = 8. Interestingly, the turbo configuration helps mid-corner adjustability.

Corner exit = 7. Occasionally wide, but otherwise OK.

Stability = 8. No problems.

Grip = 9. Pretty much unassailable due to the traction control.

High-speed controllability = 8. No high speeds to speak of.

Handling while braking = 8. These brakes are, oddly, powerful and feel effective.

Acceleration = 7. Despite the traction control taking some low-range freedom, the gearing is good, keeping the turbo spinning and reaching top speed at a good point in the rev range.

Total = 62/80

Final Comments
This car, surprisingly, was relatively fun to drive. One assumes that this is due to the turbo configuration as opposed to natural aspiration, and despite underlying hints of torquesteer this car does handle well. The close gears feel effective, and help acceleration out of corners. It is perhaps a good thing that adjustable-downforce aeroparts were left out from the parts list, as the full downforce listed may not have been helpful on this car.

______________________________________________________

TUNER: mustangman05

197bhp ///168ft/lb

Turn-in = 7. Not terrible, but not exactly agile either.

Mid-Corner Response = 5. The excessive traction control takes so much power in the middle of a turn, nothing can be done.

Corner exit = 6. The line isn’t too bad, but it will be slow.

Stability = 8. No problems.

Grip = 9. Pretty much unassailable due to the traction control.

High-speed controllability = 8. No high speeds to speak of.

Handling while braking = 5. The front brakes are hugely overpowered, frequently forcing the ABS to intervene and inducing understeer.

Acceleration = 6. Using only four of six available gears, acceleration is sometimes sluggish.

Total = 54/80

Final Comments
‘Exciting’ is not an applicable word to this setup, but what can one expect. The traction control is ridiculously strong, taking masses of power whenever the front wheels are turned – just watch to boost gauge in a corner to see how much exit speed is lost to the ‘driving aid’. The turbo isn’t always able to spool up either, using only 4 of 6 available gears on a peaky powerband isn’t ideal. Frustrating to drive.

______________________________________________________

TUNER: gregc

182bhp ///244ft/lb

Turn-in = 8. Comparatively very easy to turn in, even without extra downforce.

Mid-Corner Response = 8. With a bit of poke, it doesn’t simply wallow like most FWDs, but actually responds.

Corner exit = 8. Pretty good, and accompanied with a bit of tyre slip, meaning it’s always at high revs.

Stability = 8. No problems.

Grip = 7. Occasionally breaks out a little in 2nd or 3rd, but with throttle control it isn’t a big problem.

High-speed controllability = 8. No high speeds to speak of.

Handling while braking = 8. Good. The brakes are effective but not overly powerful, balancing stopping power with responsiveness to input.

Acceleration = 8. Smooth and relatively fast with all the torque from the supercharger, the gearing suits.

Total = 63/80

Final Comments
This is possibly the only car here that feels properly connected to the driver. Even in the middle of a turn, it still responds to throttle and steering input, a rarity in FWD cars. The close gears help it accelerate eagerly, and improve the soundtrack too. The lack of added downforce stops this car being forced down onto the road, instead relying on a good suspension setup to corner as well as it does. This is the easiest car on test to get along with, and recorded the fastest non-aeroparts lap by a considerable margin.

______________________________________________________

The Verdict
Highest Points Score = Gregc
Gregc's car recorded the fastest lap without aeroparts, making it the fastest setup here without resorting to race-car techniques. It always feels ready to respond, comparatively speaking of course, and this makes it interesting to drive as well. The gearing is just right, not quite close enough to hit the rev limiter in 6th, which is ideal. Not having traction control interfering with things made the car feel much more rewarding, not to mention easier, to drive. This car went against the grain by being the only one to employ a supercharger, and it paid off.

Moral of the Story: Don't try to resuscitate a dead patient - some cars are not meant to be tuned.

Overall a very bumpy ride, it's tight on exit meaning it pushes. You didn't list any weight reduction so I didn't add it. The handling while breaking was also effected it just didn't want to turn.

This setup was pretty soft, the car had lots of roll in mid and out. Power delivery had to be backed off due to TCS kicking in to aggressively. The track to me does require a softer than usual setup due to it's various elevation changes but to much will hurt the handling characteristics. The gearing was good until 6th gear, it was a little to short. It toped out right after turn 11 just before the back straight then again right before the hairpin. Not bad pretty smooth but controllability wasn't consistent you just never knew how the car was going to react. It posted the fastest lap but I had trouble with the consistency.

The first thing that caught my attention was the gearing. The FC wasn't tuned for the track which took away a lot of the enjoyment. The car was pretty good entering in, mid response was a little tight followed by a push due to high LSD settings. Which wasn’t that evident due to very low gearing. All in all this car had mediocre handling not bad.

First thing I noticed was the TCS way too high. I had no control of the acceleration it felt like slow motion while in the turns. It was really smooth then got rough upon acceleration. The gears were not bad but could have been better. The brakes bite really hard locks up farley quick. Overall it was very smooth but just didn't have the freedom it probably would have been good for endurance.

A little tight going through the mid and on exit it didn't have that bite. I was in and out the gas a couple of times in order to keep inside the racing line. Overall it was very smooth I would have liked to see a little more power used but it was the smoothest of the bunch and very forgiving.

Conclusion:
All the setups were very unique they all had something different to show. It was a tie for me between Rastab97 and gregc The ones I had the least problems with, both were fast smooth and forgiving in it’s own way.

Oooh, second :ouch:

I actually quite enjoyed this one, although that may be because I only had a little time to spend on it :lol: Wouldn't mind another FF at some point, but preferably something more hot hatch-y.

Well done to rastab97, too 👍

[edit] - the leaderboard...

Here's how this works... It's based on each tuners average score per judge, per week that they have entered. Sounds confusing, but I think it should work. Only tuners that have entered a minimum of 3 competitions will be included - any less than this and the "averages" thing doesn't really work. I'll post the updated leaderboard into each week's results thread - I'll also link the spreadsheet I use to work it out. Corrections are, of course, welcome but please don't message me telling me how I could do it differently - it might not be pretty or clever, but I think it works :sly:

That's a great idea. Do you mind maintaining it?

Good work with the leaderboard, Greg, I like the idea :)
Sorry to curse you once again with being my favourite setup :dopey: my favourite has only won once, and that's when I was the only judge :lol:

Just a quick thought, maybe you could also add the number of weeks entered, to show consistency and participation compared to others? Just a thought, it's up to you.

Well done to everyone who took part this week, it certainly wasn't an easy car to tune! Perhaps you noticed my standard High-Speed Controllability comment :rolleyes:
Probably the hardest week to judge, this one, as all the cars handled similarly despite huge differences in the setup!

I would wish everyone luck in Week 8, but I've done most of those already :sly: so instead I'll encourage you to carry on into Week 9! 👍

lol, the DE curse.... No worries - I tune 'em how I like 'em, it just looks like you like the same kind of setup as me! I'm looking forward to seeing the week 8 results, as I said at the time that was a really tricky one for me.

Number of competitions entered has been added, as requested.

Thats pretty much what I expected, I dont drive FWD cars so I dont know how to tune them...

Oh well, better things to come for week 8...

I have an idea for the leaderboard:

Instead of making the scores worked out by how much you scored per judge, make it a fixed points system. In a race, it doesn't matter if you win by a lap or .001 of a second, winning is winning and it's worth the same no matter how well you do it.

I think that if we could agree on a set points system, it could keep the overall leaderboard closer and more exciting.

What do you think?!

Duċk;2387649
Well, one time you were late, and another you were disqualified.

HAHAHAAA! Thats what I mean! Just call me the rogue tuner! :dunce:

Edit: Oh BTW I think GregC's ranking system is really great as it is! Hopefully I can make it up there soon.

Thanks for the nice comments on the leaderboard :)

@Der Meister - I've done it that way so it allows people who can't take part every week to be ranked alongside the regulars. I'll keep it as it is for now and we'll see how it goes - thanks for the feedback though.

@zefff - you only need one more week's results and you'll be on the leaderboard 👍

I thought that was the reason, and I agree with it :) 👍

@V8 Power - And for me... Your setup for this week was... *checks notes* roughly two and a half seconds faster than anyone else's, owing to the power and downforce.
