Tyre wear on your road car

Having just put 18,000km on our 7 month old Subaru Liberty/Legacy RX, I must say I've been very impressed with the tyre wear - the fronts and rears are showing extremely even wear, with no evidence of the front tyres rolling on the walls - the corners of the front are still very square. Based on current tread depth I would think the tyres might be good for 60-80,000km, if not more.

I don't spare the horses in cornering, although I tend to be very even in my inputs, and am very strict about getting braking completed beefore turn-in.

This has been a great contrast to our previous car, a Holden (local GM subsidiary) Vectra, which just ate front tyres.

I guess this illustrates the difference between a fairly softly sprung all-wheel drive car, versus a firmly suspended front drive car.

I was interested in the experiences of other forum members on this...

Ohhh, tire wear... if it didnt exist, I would be a happy man :) We run through expensive racing slicks like nothing. Once in a bad run, we will do a burnout so big, it could fill the parking lot of a Walmart with smoke and peels the rubber off of the tires...
Im into hardcore HIGH HP racing though. Racing slicks, and very wide street tires are all we use. If we lose traction and burnout, we notice the tireware.. its like doing 250 mph on ice while staying in one spot.. but we do it on the road. I wish there was a way to reduce tirewear on our car, as for you... congrats :)

I tend to wear out the shoulders of my front tires...I think you know why. :D :burnout:

On a different note: Does anyone know why the UK/Australian spelling of "tyre" is different from the US? Is it just 'cos we have to be different? Or was it done to differentiate from the verb form of tire, (e.g. I tire of this silly game)?

The BF Goodrich tires on my Cavalier have lasted pretty long. I have 63000 miles on them, and they still have plenty of meat on them.

Curiously, the rears are showing some shoulder wear, but the fronts (which carry more weight, and are the drive wheels) are looking pretty good.

I drive very conservatively, mostly because of the car. If I had a Camaro SS then I'm sure my tires would be a little more worn 😈

Try everwhere except in the states.
