If you're not a UK resident, please make sure you familiarise yourself with the way UK Plates Work before making a suggestion. Thanks.

My father in law has been on about buying me a private registration plate for my car for a while. I'm 40 this year, and I think he really thinks it's a cracking idea for a present. I'm not entirely fussed, I have to say.

Where I'd like your help is in suggesting valid plates for me as ideas. I'm really bad for inspiration on this sort of thing, and any that I've come up with myself have been pretty rubbish.

The budget for this is ideally under £500 (not including retention/transfer), but I'd contribute a maximum of £500 to get the right plate. So £1,000 tops.

Please don't tell me private plates are for tossers, I kind of know that (notwithstanding the fact that my father in law has one, as does my mother).

Some guidance for you:
  • You know my name.
  • My middle initials are "MW"
  • Born 16.10.72
  • Planning to buy a new car soon, so up to and including '62' on the year identifier
  • Every car registered in my name has had an X in the plate

The plate needs to be self-explanatory (at least to me!!), and must not feature the name of my car, also not the engine configuration, although I suppose "V8" wouldn't be out of the question (hint, hint!!)

The closest I've come to a plate that I'd go for that's available is XX 61 LES.

Suggestions gratefully received, especially something innovative or funny.

Go with this. They are... a pain, especially when not on a car...

This reminds me of any given tween playing Call of Duty - XxZzK1NG-SN1PEZZzZxX - only with lesbian overtones.

Yes, if we could convince my FiL of this, I'd be set!

"S8" on a Ford Mondeo. :ill:

and must not feature the name of my car
I am just the opposite. If a custom lisence plate, I would choose something that gets a meaning from the car. Or can you exchange plates in UK? (in austria you can have 1 plate for your two cars, which I find brilliant)

But the plates in Uk are expensive. Damn! Not as much as in Belgium or Dubai, but I paid 50 quid for it here.
So if you're not completly into it, it's a quite expensive not wanted present then. (i understood what you said)

Maybe the 3 last letters WHY ;)

I personally wouldn't go for something funny. I would pick something serious and that I won't regret a few months / years down the line. You can never go wrong with your name.

Edit, here's what I've started with, the rest of the letters could be anything you want.

Firstly I'm one of those people who think private plates are for tossers but there are exceptions and each to there own
I saw a once BMW with HU55Y (hussy) and that made me laugh
Also I have a Rizla race rep GSX-R and I would'nt mind R17LA (but its not avalible)

Also if you going with XX 61 LES. it would need to be spaced XX61 LES else it gives the fuzz a reason to make you hand over £60 of your hard earned money everytime they clock it

And with your D.O.B, a friend of mines favorite number was 12 so he had X444 XXX
so maybe do somthing like that?

Not sure about cars but my friend just bought a bike brand new 2 months ago and they let him choose the last 3 letters and he said they did theat when he bought the other one in 2009

When I was just out of school in the UK I bought the plate M15 SHK for GBP250. My intention was to keep it for a while then sell it in the Hong Kong Chinese community to someone who would buy it for their girlfriend/daughter displayed as M15S HK. The 'Miss Hong Kong' event is traditionally so popular here and my Chinese friends in the UK always used to bang on about who was the latest Miss HK. I figured that with the expanding Chinese community in England (people who tend to splash their cash quite freely on tacky stuff) that I would at least make my money back. Haven't tried selling yet though.

Slightly off-topic, but a couple of days back I saw a car with a license plate along the lines of "WNT3 WTF" O_O .
