Surprised nobody has made a thread for this game yet.

If you don't know what Undertale is, it's an RPG in which you, a human, fall down a hole into a land filled with lots of different monsters, and have to find a way to get back to the surface. On your journey, you have the choice of either fighting the monsters you encounter, or sparing them and showing them mercy. Collect friendliness pellets, and gain lots of LOVE along the way! =)

You can get it on Steam or on the Undertale website. The game is played best completely blind, so don't go looking through this thread for spoilers or walkthroughs before buying and playing it.

If you DO know what Undertale is, and want to discuss spoilery stuff about the different playthroughs, feel free to start discussions but please use spoiler tags along with a description of what playthrough it's a spoiler of. EG:

No Mercy spoilers:
I can't believe you fall down a hole

NerdCubed made a TESTS video last week and it looks alright but not the kind of game I would play

I have no idea what this is, but I keep hearing about it a lot and seeing this cow in a dress (Toriel I think?) all over the "art sites" I frequent. It's driving me nuts just like the Slenderman thing and Friday night at Freddy (or however it's called).

I might be wrong to judge and I'm probably missing out on something good.

It's not a game for everyone, but it's worth mentioning that Yahtzee - who I thought would be turned away by the cutesy saccharine stuff that the game has a fair amount of - thinks that it may be the best written game in 2015 so far.

If you like Earthbound, it's apparently somewhat similar (I haven't been lucky enough to play Earthbound yet so I can't say how true this is)

Undertale (also stylized as UnderTale or UNDERTALE) is a role-playing video game developed and published by indie developer tobyfox. The game was written, designed, and composed for by creator Toby Fox, with additional artwork by Temmie Chang, and was released for Microsoft Windows and OS X on 15 September 2015.

In Undertale, the player controls a human child as they navigate the fictional Underground: a large, secluded region underneath the surface of the Earth. The inhabitants of the Underground are called "monsters", a diverse and intelligent group who have been banished from the surface following a war with humanity. The child interacts with many monsters on their quest to return to the surface, with the player making decisions on whether to kill or befriend them. These choices affect the outcome of the game to a large degree, with the dialogue and story outcome changing based on their decisions.

The game received acclaim from video game critics, with particular praise for its writing and characters. Reviewers enjoyed the game's intuitive combat system, the contrast of its witty humor with a dark story, breaking the fourth wall, as well as its references to older role-playing games.

I'd get your daily fix from 4chan or something.

I did a true reset.

I really want to do a
Genocide run but I can't bring myself to do it

You can start a Genocide run once you true reset, since Flowey said that once you do so the timeline will revert back to the point when you first started the game. No one will remember what you've done in the previous timeline.

That I understand. I meant that I can't bring myself to do it because I love the characters way too much to kill any of them :(

Also, no thanks to Sans.

Just realized:

tuTORIEL
iTEM SHOP
SANS-nity
(Him and Papyrus are named after their fonts respectively)
Undyne = Undying (obvious?)
ASgore + toRIEL = Asriel.

Named after the angel of death. Also the anagram of Serial Murderer. But come on, it ends up as a sad cute little goat.

Pretty sure that's Asgore. With the horns and everything.

Oh, yeah. You may be right . It may be Asriel, though as it's implied his horns curve to the back of his head and when he's looking down, his horns look like they're pointing up like in the statue sprite.

I think it's definitely adult/transformed Asriel - the horns curve backwards/downwards whereas Asgore's curve upwards, but the biggest tell is the collar, which is identical to Asriel's (whereas Asgore has a much simpler collar). Compare and contrast:

EDIT - Also, they aren't wearing a crown in the artwork

I need help.

So i just blast through my first run on pacifist. (Thank you internet for making all character sympathetic, except Flowey but hes a heck of a future spoiler). I know I'll be getting a rather happy neutral ending in the end.

Question: Since im still at LV 1 and my max HP is 20, would be okay if i finally facing a....

......Photoshop (Insane) Flowey?

@FrzGT

Yeah, you'll be fine. Flowey will screw around with you big time, but just play along. You'll know you've done the pacifist run once the credits start rolling.

So my LV and HP will be irrelevant to that boss? I heard it uses independent and different player stats just for that boss.

So I accidentally killed Toriel at the beginning. When I got to the end and Asgore mentions really missing his wife I felt so bad, then BOOM! Flowey comes out of nowhere and ruins everything. That was a... interesting ending. Gonna have to do another run-through to try and get the Pacifist ending.

Looks like Toby updated the game and "fixed"(?) the gaster rooms to have a chance to appear in-game without editing any values. *edit* It wasn't the gaster sound file that was edited but another, unrelated one that was about dataminers not spoiling the game. Instead of a vocal "don't spoil it for others" which accompanied a related image, it's now just "hahahaha".

Undertale: The End PlayWrite
Prepare the feels.....And spoilers. Click if you dare.
A long one and huge effort

Note: Proof i play this: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/lets-see-those-desktops-rev-4-0.52282/page-355#post-10928832
I cant post on full screen for some reason.

I Start the playthrough with the omega Photoshop Flowey. Real honest Muffet's attack were surprisingly more difficult than this. Though this is quite difficult and as sane as Flowey himself.

(The title has some gem when you start the game on this state)

There, an insane flower has defeated.

So he told me afterwards to go to Alphys for assisting a date and fight the algamates on the under-lab for the last power source. It was uncanny scary, tbh.

Anyways, they finally rejoice on the castle! And look who here also!

Here comes the goatbro!

Who his name?

Hell yeah!

After his battle, the barrier opened, and if you dare to backtrack into the beginning, youll see the goatbro. But be sure to talk to shopkeepers and NPCs for different dialogue about their freedom!

Its finally over. Great story and for just 10 dollars and 350MB, great game. Not quite "the best game of all time" as some might utter. But it does have an unique game mechanic and great story. Great characterization detail too for a block graphic game.

My only complain is that its just over. everyone's happy, no replaying missions and all, only enjoying the peoples happiness unless you do the true reset. No wonder Flowey is sad. Also i l hope they discover and explore more about that bullet hell mechanics (like the UT mods recently released unofficially).

Score: 9.2/10
EDIT: Valid critisism on Undertale. Agreed on all, though im not sure about the walk cycle.
