opponents bump from wall to wall, onto your back, and speed away after that. what is the idea? i can´t find no relationship with fair play. if i had i cheat i would apply to get an even race.

Yes i see wat u r saying, The 5 second penalties can comin at the wrong time causing to lose the race. Try to take your time when ur overtaking, if u can ease up beside him u may have a better chance with passing. The 5 sec. penalty might not com in if u happen to hit him in the side during passing.

I swear at those 5 sec. penalties all the time. It's not just that you can't pass, but also that the tracks are all so narrow! This is just simply one of the bad features in GT4 that we have to put up with. Some others include autosave, the missions with those loooong waits where all you get to do is rev your car, oh, let's not forget the glitches and no save in the 24 hour events. Otherwise GT4 is great.

I've found it's best to use one extreme or the other...

usually I try to get around cleanly if I can find a weak spot in the AI's line,

but there are also times when you can just slam him into a wall or a corner where you'll both get penalized and you come out in front.

On Grand Canyon if you can get a good start at the line, you can pass before you're even 8 seconds into the race, then all the disadvantages of narrow passing zones are the AI's problem for the rest of the race and you don't even need to post that great of times to win :-)

It pisses everyone off... but it has been discussed before.

Except that the computer doesn't get penalized, AlfaAlfa. No matter how hard they hit you or the wall they keep going full blast. You just have to do your best to avoid them and the walls. On rally tracks you can usually get away with sliding your rear against the walls, but if the computer slams into your backside you'll usually get a penalty anyway.

Another one of the "live with it!"-things in GT4... Soo annoying, I've given up the rally-part of the game 'cause of this. Can't stand it!

Are you sure the AI never gets penalized? I have seen them sometimes go very slow for about 5 seconds after they hit walls. I think they can get penalties, it just doesn't happen very often. As soon as this Evel Knievel biography is over on the history channel I will try to get a screenshot if I can...

I won Ice Arena by slamming my opponent into a wall but I didn't look at the replay to see if he got a penalty.

Wallriding ;) The AI can't dish out penalties when it's half a lap behind you. Just make sure you hit the wall with the back of the car first.

P.S. @ the person called AlfaAlfa, with a Honda badge as an avatar.

finally i did it. managed to get some seconds of advantage and won Umbria-2. unfair game. I am sure there is no penalty for the AI. One of my tactics when on penality was just to block the road, if I was in front, until the penalty seconds ended. Nerve-wrecking race. Now I will try Tahiti hard number 2.

Yep, that's it. I tried on Ice Arena, Grand Canyon, Chamonix, and Tahiti and no matter how hard I got the AI to crash - there was no penalty. So the best I could do is try to spin them or push them into a corner and then block.

I stopped right in the road at Grand Canyon and the AI (Celica this time) rammed me at full speed, I stayed on the brakes - he tried to push me for a little while but my brakes held. Then he went into full reverse and rammed me again! He was only going about 12 mph but he did that over and over until I turned my Focus sideways - then when he rammed me I got a 5 second penalty and he was able to push his way around me

The best place I found to push them off the track though is on Grand Canyon right in the middle of the course on that left turn hairpin before it swoops down to the mini corkscrew. You can easily shove the AI into the soft dirt at the side and even with a penalty come out in front.

At Chamonix it was easy for the Focus to pass an Evo 6 at the starting line by starting in second gear, so that is another "cheat" that works.

A clean race is better, but sometimes if you just want to win the car or get the dang rallies over with, it's good to bounce those guys around a little :-)

I love penalties... stop you from making stupid moves like braking hard and drifting sidway in front of a speeding AI or trying to brake late and running up the bum of an AI....

in arcade mode I set the penalty to 10 secs. I forces me to drive better and smoother and to not make stupid manuvers. :)
thinking of bumping it up to 20 secs...

I wouldn't mind it so much if

1. The AI got penalties for running into you
2. You DIDN'T get penalties for the AI running into you
3. You didn't get penalties for coming CLOSE to a wall in the ice races

You didn't get penalized for him hitting your side. He partially hit the front of the car. Even if the AI is behind you, as long as the hit lands near the front half of your car, you're screwed.

Actually not always true. It has been shown, in a video some time ago, that the AI does slow down for 5 seconds when ramming the wall. Wish I had a link... I've seen it myself a couple times on the Capri track, especially. However it doesn't seem to get penalized for ramming you in the back.

But GT4 is not RL. In RL if you hit another car or they hit you you are pretty much out of the race (watch NASCAR or F1 much?). Same with hitting a wall. If GT4 wished to be a true to life race game, you would have to avoid all contact or start the race over. Even minor car to car contact in a real race (esp. SCCA races) would mean a black flag and a drive through the pits penalty for the "hitter". I bet only 5% or less of the GT4 owners would like that kind of restriction. It would be VERY frustrating, especially with the state of the AI today. But a toggle "real racing"/""pretend racing" switch would be cool.

I wonder if you could actually finish a game with these conditions... No wall touches hard enough to "shake the screen" , no car-to-car touches that you initiate (no leaning on the AI to get you around a corner or punting them into the gravel). On minor touches you have to drive through the pits to take a penalty. Of course it would all be on the honor system -- you are only cheating yourself. Might try that after my current game...

I disagree that being able to crash out of a race would be frustrating. Plenty of PC racing games contain car damage and if anything it simply makes you drive in a more realistic manner because you need to finish the race. In games like GP2 it was possible to lose your front wing or a wheel by ramping over a high kerb too hard. You definitely did not purposefully mow the lawn in that game. It really did make it better. Also, there was a difficulty option that allowed you to have an indestructible car if you really wanted it, and still race against the stiffest opposition level. What GP2 was missing was 700 road cars...

I DO agree though that with the state of the AI, car damage on GT4 would indeed make racing very frustrating. I have never in any game found it so difficult to avoid being driven into by AI goons, and if that always spelt the end of my race my GT4 CD would probably be swinging from the rear view mirror of my RL car now. But, the PS2 is not a powerful computer. I do hope that GT5 has more intelligent AI and more opponents per race and car damage, and becomes the real racing simulator as well as the real driving simulator, and becomes all things to all driving enthusiasts, and the most complete car sim available. But then again we might not see the next release before our nice yellow sun becomes a red giant...
