Unusual Problem with GT4

It seems there is a part of my disk that no longer works.
Explanation: I have had GT4 for about 2 years now and has worked beautifully since then. (*although it was a little slow at the opening movie) I had not played the game for a while. Now recently I got a DFP finally and wanted to get back into the game. I started the system and everything went fine up until after I created a new save, this is usually when the start movie begins. Instead I'm treated to a nice never-ending black screen and it sounds like the system is running idle (just hear the disk spinning).:(

I have a slimline so i flipped up the top and cleaned the lens with a q-tip. No Dice. Used cleaning kit on disk. No Dice.

I have no idea why this is happening and I'm wondering how to fix this. I'm worried this might have to do with the disk since it's already reading a part of the game. (maybe something to do with */\)

Advice will be truly appreciated.

Try some other DVD-9 game (examples include GTA:SA, MGS 3, MGS 2: Substance and the Xenosaga games) and see if they play. If not, its your PS2. If so, than your GT4 is busted.
Also, never use lens cleaners designed for DVD players on your PS2. Its not good for it.

@Toronado: I do own the other MGS Games and they do play fine so I think your right, but I barely have any scratches (maybe one got a little too deep.) I think I'll try to get another copy. Thanks to all who replied.

Put weight on top of the disk tray cover. Not too much. Couple of cd cases should do it. Worked for mine!

Toronado: GTA:SA, MGS3, and Xenosaga (for the most part) are not DVD-9 games.

GoW1/2, GT4, Midnight Club 3 DuB edition, and Final Fantasy X are the most common ones. Both Xenosaga Episode 1 games are also Dual Layered.

Thats your laser on its way out for sure! Same thing happened to my mate (but his was worse and would not even begin to load), he tried different games (even Dual Layered ones) and they worked, but 2 copies of GT4 (his & mine) did not.

I changed the laser for him (cost £12 delivered) and it now reads GT4 better than ever! ;)

Only takes 5 minutes to fit.

I recently had to retire my first GT4 disk and pick up a new one.

It was playing fine until one day my hyper lab puppy came bounding through the living room, got snagged on my DS2 controller cord and managed to yank the controller from my hand, and my PS2 from its resting space.

The controller was fine, along with the PS2 (thankfully), but the disk was pretty banged up. I managed to prolong its life by running it through a Disk DR 5 or 6 times, but then one day it just kept locking up after loading the data.

So i figured it was time for a new one. I may try running it through the cleaner to see if I can get it to work again, but for how fast the new one loads up, I will probably just retire it. It had a good run.

Being as the OP hasn't posted regarding the original issue since April, I think we're safe to assume the he's resolved his issue by the means he suggested, and this extra discussion that's resurfaced is superfluous.

Case closed. (Again)
