Hi Guys,

I have just ordered a G27 + Playseat, and am looking at which PS3 games to get to play with it. I have tried to do a lot of research, however many discussions surrounding this topic seem old!

I would like some up to date recommendations about what games work well? I am open to a mix of realistic/ arcady games. F1 2012 looks cool, but there seems to be a lot of people claiming to be having problems with it.

GT5 has been updated to have good compatibility, so i'll be getting that. Would be particularly interested in games that offer good clutch control.

Have also been considering NFS Shift/ SHift 2; Dirt 2/3; and unsure about which F1 racing game to get: 2011 seems to get great reports.

Really appreciate any advice that anyone more experienced than I could offer me!!!

Thanks :)

The best ps3 game for force feedback is probably Ferrari challenge. In all honesty I thought it was the best all around sim on the ps3 as far as the way the cars feel.

Ok, cool. What other games have you played that work well with the g27? As I said, Sim is cool, but how fun is it? Do you have any knowledge about F1, NFS Shift1/2 and Dirt? :)

Thanks a lot for your input!

I'm really only into the sim style games. I kind of liked the first shift,a nd the first dirt game. Someone else will ahve to comment on the arcade racers.

F1 / Dirt work great with the G27. The PS3 version of the F1 series (especially 2011) have a bad reputation for poor graphics, as for Dirt I'm not sure. I own the PC versions of Dirt 2/3 and they are both fantastic games well optimised for the G27.

I own F1 2012 on the PC, I also downloaded the demo for the PS3. I thought the PS3 version looked absolutely terrible graphically and can see why people complain, considering how great GT5 looks. I didnt like F1 2012 as a game, it annoyed me so much that I gave up on it before I gave it a good enough chance, I did however really love F1 2010/2011. They weren't accurate simulations but for an F1 fan they were solid and believeable quality racing games.

As for the NFS Shift series, they have a bad reputation for having chronic input lag and what I would personally call an abomination of an attempt at a semi sim racing/arcade style mixup. I say abombination because combined with the input lag and the dodgy physics it isn't a gaming experience I would recommend to anyone, NFS Shift 2 is a game I wish that I had never bought. That said, some people liked them so don't take my word for it. If you can deal with the horrible physics, input lag and psychopathic murderous AI then the single player has some worth to it as a play through to work your way up through the various events and ranks of car.

GT5 is in my opinion the best racing game on the PS3, the most polished and most complete. G27 compatibility has been there from the start, just wasn't remappable until they patched it. As a game though it does lack a storyline based singleplayer mode, rather it is like a car museum game focussed around the cars and the racing, rather than on a progression or story game. Physics wise as a sim I also believe GT5 is the best on consoles, some opinions may differ but I'm sure you will find that mine is a popular opinion on this site ^^. And as for graphics, GT5 is again one of the best looking (if not the best looking) games on the PS3.

If you like replays or taking photos then GT5 has IMO the most realistic and fluid detailed replays of any racing game or sim by quite a margin (PC or console alike), down to the suspension movement and the tyre movement on the tarmac nothing really comes close to it, and the photo mode is capable of producing some amazingly lifelike looking photos.

On to clutch control, sadly the clutch in GT5 is quite frankly terrible, you're limited to what is basically an on and off switch with a painfully annoying tendancy to miss gears and force you in neutral if it deems any of your shifts as less than perfect. If you want a properly working clutch then you're going to have to move to the PC for your sim racing. With that said on a final note, Project CARS releasing in 2013 has a proper clutch (atleast it does in the testing/development on the PC right now) and will be available on the PS3. I'm assuming the clutch will be the same on the PS3 as it is on the PC.

Hi Bigbazz,

Thanks for your long response! I went for ferrari Challenge, GT5 Academy edition, Dirt 1, and f1 2010. When you said f1 and dirt where great with the g27, I hope these were the versions you meant!

Project Cars sounds pretty exciting, does the racing community have high hopes for it?

Should I just ignore the shifter in general for games on the PS3? From what people have been saying, it seems like there isnt the software to support the hardware to make sim racing a worthwhile experience on the PS3? However, I have also seen many people say it is awesome.... What do you think? :)

If you can live without a proper clutch then some really quality sim racing can be had online with Gran Turismo 5. If you can find yourself a league or a group of racers then even better.

GT5 has some amazingly well done tracks (The Nurburgring is in my eyes the best out there, and Spa/Suzuka are only matched by iRacing), a massive list of cars and some solid physics with great options for online racing, though many people do end up moving towards the PC for their racing, with arguably better physics, much bigger racing fields (GT5 is limited to 16) and many other things.

Fact is though, if you're at the point where you're not prepared to buy a PC, you're probably not that serious about those details for it to matter, you can really get some great sim racing on the PS3 and I've personally had some of my best racing on GT5. Give those titles a try and see how you fare. With those above titles I'm sure they will keep you busy for a long time.

On the subject of F1 and Dirt. I've not played the original Dirt, though I do have it on my steam account I never installed it. Dirt 2 and 3 are must have racing games though, but don't be fooled, they are more Offroad/Rally/Extreme sports hybrid type games than pure WRC style rally. Out of the F1 games F1 2011 is my favourite, though F1 2010 is a great game, I have the most played time on that one of the lot.

Personally I don't race on GT5 anymore, but this is the race report I did for the last proper race I did in the game back around when the Spa circuit was released.

Was some epic racing in a 12 lap sprint around Spa.
