UPDATE

Build in the surround system,
Hid the wires better,
Made the dead pedal hanging

This is my result of a DIY cockpit. I build it after criterias as follows:

- Stability and sturdy, overall and between wheel, pedals, seat and gear
- Comfort, for a racing poition and not a driving position
- Customizable seat length for guests
- Able to put it away - taking it apart.
- Cheap materials

I have no skills in this sort of things, I don't even own any tools - had to borrow from my friends :-). It been a great and creative challenge, that I been enjoying :-) Last week I had 10 of my friends to test it out, and they were all amazed, even though the cockpit isn't that pretty... yet!

It's made of an old wooden washing basket, a go-cart seat and pine wood. The basket cost 20$, seat 100$ and rest of the materials about 100$ in the hardware store.

Here is the result.. so far.

As you can see here, its build of 2 parts, the seat rig and the wheel rig - those two parts is easily detachable to hide it away from the living room. The washing basket is about 40 centimetres wide on the inside.

The two metal circles is mounts for the pedals, see picture further down. The wheel part is tilted a bit, but maybe need a few more degrees.

The stand the gears is made on is the lid for the washing basket, that I cut down and made pretty stable for rough playing :-)

Here you can see some of the pedals, where I also put a mat for comfort. In the lower part of the picture you can see the seat lengh is adjustable for bigger people (I'm little). The 'feet' for the seat is originally supporters for a shelf and small table legs from the hardware store.

Made a resting plate for the left foot, though I need to make it smaller, as people with bigger feet struggle using the clutch. The sticker on top of the wheel is made of tin foil behind invisible tape

Here you can see how easily the parts can be taken apart and put away.

The things I'd like to add and tweak on the cockpit:

Make it more pretty to look at
- Paint
- Cut some corners off the wooden rig
- Hide the wires better 👍
Make it even more comfortable
- Put on Neopren on the Go-cart seat (might be too expensive for me)
- Rearrange the pedals a la SpeedyK's Lotus
Build a surround system around the seat
- Just ordered Logitech Z-5500 system
👍
PlaystationEye stand
- Haven't bought the cam yet

Feedback is very welcome! 👍 I'll update this when ever I progress.

I hope I left you with inpiration for your own DIY cockpit, let me know if you have any questions to help.
I can post more detailed pictures of anyone like ;-)

I think the design is pretty clever. But I question the need for a dead pedal in an already narrow cockpit.

Thanks :-).

I drove it before the pedal was build on, and my friend and me both said that we need to rest the foot somewhere else then the clutch when not in use. Doing the last 3 WRS events (where we cant use the clutch) its been amazingly nice to rest ones foot there 👍.

Yeah, the narrowness is the only gripe from me, otherwise it's a really neat design. The brake and gas are probably too far apart for my liking too but it's all a matter of personal preference.

Ingenious use of limited rersources 👍

I agree that a dead pedal is a must – also agree with the comment about the pedal spacing - moving the brake pedal a little to the right would improve it, IMO.

It feels good with the spacing as it is, but might be better if I move them closer - Think I'll look at it a bit, it just needs a few more holes on the pedal mount ;-), thanks for the feedback! I already moved the pedals a bit with the adjusting the G27 pedals give, but yeah, might need more.

Thanks, nice you can see it :-)

Try looking at the set-up of a (sporty) real car's pedals for more guidance.

With my G25, I copied my Lotus Exige set-up

For my G27, I will probably try to copy my 911's arrangement – will need two inverted pedals and one not.

Wow, ok, huge difference from mine - shows I have no clue on sports cars (never even owned a normal car!)

That looks awesome speedyK, I guess I'll copy that spacing to make it more real like. Thanks for the pictures 👍👍

Hmm, need a third wooden bar to make a non-inverted gas-pedal, think I'll leave that out. Is it only Porsche that have it like that?

EDIT: your mat is just like mine, hehe, but I turned mine upside-down to have rubber instead.

Pretty sure my Infiniti has a non-inverted gas pedal too. Reminds me of my old wah-wah pedal I used to use when I played the guitar!

Cool set-up! Looks like it would be fun to dress it up to look like the nose of an open-wheel car or something to that effect :)

Exactly what I was thinking

It's not all that uncommon though. The brake and clutch require a lot more leverage, even with hydraulics. The gas usually just pulls a cable going to the throttle (or spring/bungee for fly-by-wire) so the manufacturer can pick whichever mounting method they prefer.

That rig in the first few posts looks like it would be murder on the back. The angle of the wheel vs the angle of the seat would have me unable to walk within 30 minutes.

It looks like that, maybe I should post a picture where I'm sitting in it, so you can see how the position is - remember, it's a go-cart seat!

I don't know why, but i really like the design of your Cockpit...👍

Hehe, Thanks, I feel the same way about it 👍
