USB Extension that works with DFGT/PS3

Looking to run a USB extension (20-30 feet) from my closet where my equipment is, to under my TV for easy hookup for my DFGT/Raceseat setup. I ordered this from monoprice but have found it to randomly stop working, while I smash into a wall during an online race...DOH! Any ideas? Will USB to Cat5e/6 1.1 work with a PS3?

I used a short USB extension for a while with my DFGT and found it lost connection every so often.

Eventually I realised it happened when my sub woofer auto on/off kicked it (it switches itself on or off when there is/isn't bass frequency activity).

I removed the extension and it was fine. Presumably it had poor shielding so I'd suggest you make sure you get a high quality one, especially for a longer extension.

Oddly, I've moved onto a fanatec csr now and without the extension this still happens occasionally but it reconnects immediately unlike the DFGT.

From t'internets:

"USB 2.0 provides for a maximum cable length of 5 meters for devices running at Hi Speed (480 Mbit/s). The primary reason for this limit is the maximum allowed round-trip delay of about 1.5 μs. If USB host commands are unanswered by the USB device within the allowed time, the host considers the command lost. When adding USB device response time, delays from the maximum number of hubs added to the delays from connecting cables, the maximum acceptable delay per cable amounts to 26 ns.[42] The USB 2.0 specification requires cable delay to be less than 5.2 ns per meter (192,000 km/s, which is close to the maximum achievable transmission speed for standard copper wire)."

In short, your cable is too long to work properly using the output that the PS3 supplies from its USB port.

Mine had 2 meters and disconnect sometimes, but rarely. If you want to use long extension then search one with power supply added.

The G27 wheel and maybe G25 as well, have some interesting "requirements" on their USB connection. I built a USB switching box for a guy a few months ago and every single device he had connected worked perfectly except the G27 wheel. I don't know if it's power requirements or what. However, I can tell you it wasn't a communications issue which only leaves power. (USB sticks and disk drives worked just fine)

I'd try the powered hub like clevohead suggested. Put it at the end next to the wheel.

So PS3-->Monoprice cable-->HUB-->G27

Sorry for the on topic hijack (didn't think it was necessary to start a new thread):

I have a Fanatec CSR and the same problem. I'm looking to purchase a USB extension as the cord can not reach my PS3. Has anyone had any problems connecting a Fanatec with a USB extender? Do I need a special kind of extension cord? (As was mentioned earlier) Under any specific length?

Sorry again for the hijack and thanks for any replies.

Maybe the way to go is an extension cord for the PS3, so its located closer by the wheel.

But then I guess you would have to deal with added distance for video output...

That might be a simpler way to solve the technical issue of USB signal loss over distance.

Just a suggestion...

As already stated, a powered USB hub is best. Though I'm not sure it would be long enough?

I use a powered BELKIN 4 port extension, I bought it at Best Buy. I think it has a 15ft cord?.. It works great with my TH8rs shifter, and my USB sticks for "duping".

I bought a generic non powered usb 4port hub, but it does not work at all when plugged into the extension. Ill have to get a powered one...

Thank you for all of the help everyone!

I have a G27 and have been using this non-powered Belkin USB hub. It's plugged into the 2nd USB port on my slim model.

This is the 6ft USB extension I use.

I also have a USB sound card plugged into the hub for the mic on my headset.

With that setup I haven't had any problems. When I charge my controllers I always plug them into the first (outside) USB plug in the PS3. The only time I may have had a problem is when I plugged an Apple USB keyboard into the hub with everything else. The keyboard also had USB ports that were not being used. GT5 kept kicking me out to the XMB so I did a file system restore and updated the PS3 which fixed the problem. If I use the keyboard again I'll probably need a powered USB hub.
