Hello all,

I'd like some help from the Forza Planet community to help me out on an academic project for the psychology class I'm in. The project I'm working on is due on the 20th of April. I will be cutting off sign-ups after the 18th of April.

For the project, I am required to conduct a psychological experiment and write a report detailing the experiment and its results.

My experiment will center around the prevalence of the assist known as the "Ideal Line" display, as seen in a variety of racing games, and whether this actually helps drivers to learn an unknown car/track combination or if it is just a distraction.

All drivers in the experiment will need to follow these parameters:
 • Car: <Details via PM>
 • Track: <Details via PM>
 • Assists: All off, except for Auto transmission.
 • Steering: Normal
 • Racing Line: <Details via PM, may differ.>
 • Tuning or modifications: No modifications or tuning setups allowed. You can, however, change the livery.
 • Mode: Free Race < Hot Lap
 • Time Spent on Track: Two 15 minute sessions; when time is up, finish up your current lap to end the session.
All drivers must record the time of each lap they complete and upload their replay to their Storefront.
If you mess up during your run, do not restart! Restarting will compromise the fairness of the experiment!

If you'd like to sign up, fill out the really tiny survey below in your post, indicating your interest. I'll send a Private Message to you detailing the car/track combination and whether you will have the racing line on or off.
 1. How much real-life racing or track driving experience do you have?
 2. How much experience do you have driving in Forza 4?
 3. On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being best), how do you rate yourself as a driver in Forza? Be honest!

Anyone interested?

How soon would you need this done?

I've heard that replays stop recording after 15 minutes of driving. If you want the full replay, should we do 2 sessions of 15 minutes each?

I wouldn't mind doing this.

• I have zero real life racing experience.
• I have been playing FM4 since its release, and have played FM since the first was released.
• I would rate myself a 7 - 7.5

Hey ShawtyoneR,

I've edited the first post in response to your questions, but to maintain coherence I'll answer here too:
1. I'll need the recording done by the 15th of April; the project is due on the 20th.
2. Yes, do two sessions of 15 minutes.

I'm willing to take part, should I try and improve with auto transmission before the attempt (With a different car and track)? As the last time I used that was in GT4s time, and I don't want to look like the drunken idiot on track.

1. I have no real life driving experience at all.
2. I have quite a bit of experience in Forza 4, I started playing the Forza series about 3 months before Forza 4.
3. 8, unless we're talking about racing with other cars on track.

An odd question, but as we are doing 2 15 minute sessions, do we stop as the 15 minutes is up and record the times of all laps we finished within the 15 minutes, or finish the lap we are on when the 15 minutes is up and then record the times of all laps done. Hopefully I've explained what I'm actually asking well enough. Thanks.

Hi 2121,

I have to have all drivers use auto transmission, as the test will be conducted on drivers with a wide variety of skills (or lack thereof). You can improve your driving with the auto-transmission but you must use a different car/track combo.

Also, complete your lap when the 15 minutes, and then record the times of all your laps.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I wasn't really questioning why we have to use auto transmission but was just checking so I don't end up with massive differences between my worst and best laps while I'm learning to use it again. I'll give this a go tomorrow, or as it's now past midnight here, later today.

If it requires to do one session with full racing line one, I can already tell you the outcome: it's a distraction! :D Seriously though, please PM me the details and I'll try to record two sessions before the 15th.

1. 20 years of heavy commute which occasional road-rage experience, some track experience (racing for fun on the Nurburgring, amateur mud speedway racing)
2. I've played FM since the release of the series (FM1, 2, 3 & 4)
3. I think I'm a 7,5 when racing human opponents, 8,5 when alone on the track.

I think this is a very interesting project! Well done. Unfortunately I could not participate as I dont have a Live Gold account and so I am not able to upload any videos.

But I wanted to point out a little problem with your project: You want to know if the suggested line is any help on a "unknown" track. But I doubt that you will find many people here on Forza Planet that are not familiar with any track in the game.

I personally think that a suggested line is a big help on any unknown track and can improve your lap times. I remember driving Fujimi Kaido the first time without a suggested time - I was crashing nearly every corner because I cannot see what is 100 meters in front of my car ;)

I agree with what tomcat66 said and would like to point out one more thing: The 'suggested line' aid in FM4 is far from being the ideal line. If someone stuck to it closely, it would likely slow them down, by quite a bit. I guess every semi-experienced Forza players has noticed this upon turning the suggested line on for a track they do know a bit.

Thus, if you are doing a control group to check whether lap times will imrpove faster with or without the suggested line, there's a certain point when that aid becomes a huge hindrance.

Not to be a party pooper, but I thought that this bit of information might be important.

1. I have no real life racing experience at all.
2. I have quite a bit of experience in Forza 4,played Forza 3
3. 7

Hope I can help you

Perhaps the tracks on their own are not so unknown, but I doubt everyone has driven all car/track combinations.

I do know that from my perspective that the suggested line can be a distraction if you become overly reliant on the line's suggestions.

Anyway, I've sent out PMs to the next few sign-ups.

Any more volunteers?

How much real-life racing or track driving experience do you have?

None

How much experience do you have driving in Forza 4?

4 years

On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being best), how do you rate yourself as a driver in Forza? Be honest!

7

PM me =o)

for academics, im game.
How much real-life racing or track driving experience do you have?
less than 3 times on a track irl.
How much experience do you have driving in Forza 4?
ive played since it was released.
On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being best), how do you rate yourself as a driver in Forza? Be honest!
id rate myself as a 6. I'm in the top 4% based on the what the game tells me. i hover between 3% and 5% according to the circuit percentages.

More PMs sent.

For new volunteers after this post, I'll be away at an anime convention with some real-life friends on the 7th, so if I don't send a PM during this time, don't panic! I'll send out messages on the 8th.

Just thought I'd mention that replays are good for up to around 45 mins, sometimes more. I'm not sure what the exact limit is though.

I would volunteer for this, but won't because 1: I'd say the braking line, although not strictly accurate and best treated as a 'heads up' rather than absolute truth is far more helpful and less distracting than the full line. 2: none of the tracks are unfamiliar in my case.

I would be interested to see the results for those new to the game though.

Is the only place to save replays With no opponents under hot lap section? I tried test drive in the upgrade area but wouldn't let me save or view a replay. Thanks!

You can only save replays with no opponents in the hot lap section under free play, test drive just jumps straight back to the menus. You can still use your own car through the garage though.

Does anyone know how large these replay files might be? I won't have access to stable broadband until the evening of the 19th, so I might not be able to upload a replay until then.

I'd still like to try, because I know what it's like trying to get volunteers for a school study. :)

 1. One autocross day, two tourist laps on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a rental car. Otherwise just ~9 years of borderline irresponsible driving on empty rural roads.
 2. 4758.27mi covered; 59:17:45 spent driving. I got the game on launch day.
 3. My win/race ratio is 85.5%, so I guess "8." Online I tend to be the slowest of the fastest (2nd-5th or so), in FM4 and also other sims. I race exclusively with the controller, and it would probably be relevant to note I've had the "Ideal Line" turned completely off since day one.
