Visiting this site keeps getting worse.

IE11, have you actually used this to see what the site look like on it?

This is not zoomed in or anything. The site is a mess on IE11, overlap city with text images and ads.

Worse yet is the long running scripts that kill the page dead and have to wait a minute before I can kill the tab. Browsing something like the GT Sport photomode thread is impossible. Also certificate pop ups every few seconds I assume coming from the ad banners.

Who uses IE though right?

I try firefox but I get tabs reloading themselves and hanging for long periods.

Is the site built for google chrome? ResetEra (new NeoGAF home) uses XenForo and has no issues with IE11 or firefox and can load 100 hi-res images no problem.

Is this intentional design?

All versions of Internet Explorer up to 11 are not fully supported as they do not support the site's more modern HTML standards. A modern browser (like Edge, Chrome, or Firefox) support these standards and thus have little issues. This was addressed in the latest site update found here.

Yes, I have, but as mentioned by Lameonade, no version of IE is officially supported here. IE is used by less than 2.5% of visitors to GTP, and that number has been steadily falling on a consistent basis for years.

Obviously, I'd love to support older browsers, but I develop and maintain the site by myself. If I spent the time necessary to build in backwards-compatibility while still offering a robust experience for users on contemporary browsers and mobile devices — and that's roughly 97% of visitors — I would fall even further behind. Compromises have to be made in order to move forward.

Regardless, your post (and @christara321's thread on the same topic reminds me I do have a few hacks up my sleeve that should make the site more readable on IE10/IE11. I have just implemented this now so please take another look.

Well the changes have made a big difference so thank you, Jordan. Layout is great now and I can browse the heavy threads.

I've yet to try the site with firefox to see if the issues remain. I also have Pale Moon, a firefox variant and had issues so I'll see. I just like to use IE11 on my gaming PC for sites like BBC.

I wonder what GTP would look like on a Mosaic '93 web browser.
An interesting question, but I don't think it would work. Because GTP enforces secure connections via TLS using modern ciphers, many older browsers will not be able to connect to the server at all. You can't access the site using any version of IE older than version 7, for example.

Just downloaded and fired up Netscape Navigator (surprisingly it runs fine on Windows 10), and here's what my end looks like. It should be noted that it is impossible to click anything to the right of the list of links on the left. I have to tab between links in order to visit them.

Have to admit I'm surprised Netscape even loads on Win10 let alone displays a modern site as "readable" as it does.

Still some issues while not logged in.

gtplanet tab hanging due to long running script. I have flickr, youtube, discogs, soundcloud, resetera tabs open and are fully working.

Worst bit is the certificate pop up. Doesn't matter if I hit yes no or x, it will pop up again another two times, then come again a minute later. Both faults must be from the ad banners.

Once logged in the site the ads go and browsing is perfect, I log out and the cert pop-ups start again. Don't know what could be done separately for IE. I guess the ads are handled the same across all browsers?

I don't mind ads, just can't browse without logging in. Not a big deal, so I guess just log in.

Weird thing is the ad banners often show blank banners so can't even see what being advertised.

Who is the certificate from?

There's not much I can do about it, but FWIW, I don't see any security alerts when browsing as a guest using a stock install of IE11. You could try adjusting your security options ("Internet Options" > "Advanced" tab > "Security" section, uncheck "Warn about certificate address mismatch" and/or "Check for publisher's certificate revocation").

Could it be from the image in post 7?
I don't know. I opened up GTPlanet on IE11 on my own machine and nothing about any certificates pops up at all.

Here's my IE version:

I also visited the page with the picture TB mentioned and still no certificate issues presented themselves.

I was only asking because that looks like the only "odd" thing on that page. :)

No it's site wide. When I log in the cert pop ups disappear along with the ads. Has to be the ads generating the cert pop ups.

I'm running a newish install of Win 10 so it's not a years old install.

I'll try to uncheck those things, Jordan.

EDIT:

Here's a cert pop up from today without unchecking anything yet.

After I click yes the page hangs, stops responding. I recover the page then go to the main sub forum and it just hangs. I have to shut the tab down and log in. Once logging in and the ads go there's no problem at all.
