Vauxhall/Opel

i was wondering, i used to live in Sweden, and saw Opels frequently then i came to the UK, and saw a car maker i hadnt heard of b4 (Vauxhall) and didnt see a single Opel at all. then my uncle said their the same company (sort of ish), but in the UK theyre called Vauxhall and everywhere else its known as Opel. so whats the point in separate names?

Well, because they're separate companies - both Opel and Vauxhall were bought by GM some years ago, and because of local identification of branding GM keeps the names alive and separate. Would you buy a Vauxhall? Would an English person be as likely to buy an Opel as a Vauxhall.

I don't think either of them have any product unique from the other - except maybe the Tigra.

No they don't, they used to have different car names, but even the car names are the same now. An example being Opel Vectra and Vauxhall Cavalier were exactly the same but now they are both known as the Vectra. Mostly Vauxhalls car names were ditched except for the Astra which used to be called an Opel Kadett, I think.

I dunno if I explained that very well.

Nah - I'd say you pretty much nailed it.

Yeah, at one point they were completely separate companys, with completely different cars. Vauxhall was based in Luton, UK, and Opel based somewhere in Germany (Ruselheim I think, or somewhere nearby). Then GM bought both of them, and they've produced that same cars with different names and badges ever since! Also, take a look at Holden in Australia, a lot of their cars are Vauxhall/Opel models as well.

Indeed - the bulk of their line up! Barina (Corsa), Astra, Vectra, Zafira, Vectra and the Frontera...

Actually, we had a Vectra - it was good car, but I wouldn't like to have had it past the 80,000 km we had it - I suspect that car had some longer term issues (and it ate front tyres like you wouldn't believe!). Great handling though - but Holden did have a pretty severe play with them here.
