Jalopnik
WEST RICHLAND, WA (SEPT 13, 2007) - Shelby Supercars (SSC), manufacturer of the ultra high-performance Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo, set the new "World's Fastest Production Car" record earlier today with an average top speed of 255.83 mph. Confident of the 1183 hp vehicle's abilities, SSC set out to validate their top speed claim in accordance with the strict guidelines set by Guinness World Records. Among other requirements, in order to meet Guinness' approval, a vehicle testing for the top speed record must race down the course, turn around, and make a second pass in the opposite direction within one hour.
The vehicle's "top speed" is calculated by averaging the top speeds of each pass in order to negate any favorable road or weather conditions. Today, on a temporarily-closed 2 lane stretch of public highway in Washington State, the Ultimate Aero posted a top speed of 257.11 mph (413.83 kph) on its first pass and 254.55 mph (409.71 kph) on its return pass to set the new top speed record at a staggering 255.83 mph (411.76 kph). The data, collected by Dewetron's world-renowned GPS tracking system, and other checks will be verified by Guinness before the Ultimate Aero is officially crowned the "World's Fastest Production Car." This breaks the current official record held by the Koenigsegg CCR at 242 mph by 11.83 mph and the Bugatti Veyron's unofficial speed of 253 mph by 3.11 mph.
According to Mr. Khan, they'll be submitting the full monty of test results and whatnot to Guinness on Monday. And some video to us around the same time. Pa-zam!!

^ Looks like the Veyron is only a nice 'prestige' car now. :indiff:

-> Curious about the car? Here it is:

^CLICKY^

-> But guess what, half the cylinders (V8), half the prestige (well, duh), and half the price (USD$550K). I'd rather get a car that delivers results than all the showboating floating on my ego. ;)

EDIT-> And best of all, 6-speed manual transmission!!!

-> I agree with Lambo-lover, in 6 years, that pretty much a HUGE feat of a tiny company like SSC. :)

With that much power and that little weight it better dethrone the CCX and the Veyron on top speed. I'd still rather have the hefty (and apparently nimble) Veyron with its luxuries and prestige than this "Shelby".

-> I'm aware about the nimbleness of the Veyron. But in my personal opinion, the car will be "too expensive and fragile" to toss it around both street and track. The Koeniggsegg CCX, Saleen S7TT, SSC UATT, Zonda F, and MT900S, are the hyper cars that for me more conforting to toss it around the track or around the interstate. I'm not saying the 16.4 is a wuss of a hypercar, it just 'too luxurious' for my taste. That is just me. :)

I hope you're not referring to this as a car related to Carroll.

I'm still for the Veyron. It has a lot more presence and just seems all-around nicer. If I needed a track car as well, I would consider something like this, but probably go with the Saleen TT or something.

THere seems to be quite a bit of luxury in the SSC Aero IMO.

I'm surprised. It actually does seem pretty nice in there. I was expecting something totally stripped, but the inside actually seems semi-habitable.

And just curious, how long car this car maintain top speed before the tires blow or it runs out of gas?

Small correction: Weight doesn't matter, aside from adding to/subtracting from the load placed on the tires. It's aerodynamics and power.

Id still have a Veyron too. Has the SSC gone into production?

20 SSC Ultimate Aeros. Unknown on these TT models. Like Koenigsegg though, the only dealer is in Las Vegas.

The one thing that I did not expect though was a near 260 Mph top speed on 1 run.

I was quite skeptical of the SSC as some of you may recall, but more power to them for getting it done!

(USA! USA! USA! USA!)

My guess is that its only a matter of time before the SSC is taken down, probably by some new form of the CCX, or maybe that Melling Hellcat that was discussed a while back. Progress is progress, but when it comes down to an outright achievement, I'd still say the Veyron in itself is a far-bigger milestone than the SSC.

Still, a round a beer to these guys! Its good to see US back on top again!

Now when will Saleen get around to making the S7TT able to do it?

Offtopic: S7TT is definately a hypercar I'd love to own. THAT is an American supercar/hypercar that I really like. I'd be proud to have that sitting next to my Carrera GT and Zonda in my rich man's garage.

Snore. Wake me up when its important. Like when they make a car that is sufficient enough to do something other than break a meaningless statistic.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they managed to do it. But only because it should mean people will give up on such useless ventures. This SSC has no soul of its own, just like the 'Egg doesn't.

Does the Veyron have a soul in your opinion? Oh, and I do agree with your first two sentences ten-fold.

Thanks for info there 👍 I hope some TV show like Top Gear will show this car :)

You speak as if you believe the pursuit to be the fastest will ever end. It won't. Since the automobile's introduction, someone's had the desire to see how fast one can go. Regardless of the current record, be it 100, 200, or 255mph, someone will want to go faster. The fastest is just never quite fast enough.

It looks as though Shelby just blew a quartet of tailpipes up VAG's nose... But didn't the Veyron take 6 years as well? How long did we wait for that?

A statistic made even more meaningless by the fact that some tuner with a Corvette or Porsche will likely break it in the (near) future... that a Callaway Corvette (just one car away from production... since "one" probably doesn't count as "production") did just 1 mph less over a decade ago, and that the actual wheel-driven speed record is well over 400 mph (for turbines and both naturally aspirated and turbocharged piston engines)... which means we'll see street cars "break" the "road car" or "production car" record over and over again until emissions and safety regulations effectively strangle all attempts, or someone tires of the whole charade and builds a street-legal streamliner with variable aerodynamics.

Hmmmm... with so many "street-legal" racing tires out on the market nowadays... the 300 mph "road car" might not be too far off.

Congrats on getting the top speed

BUT somewhere in a small shed in the UK, there is a company which will beat them...even if it is made in a shed...don't tell me any different...I just know there is!!

Now when will Saleen get around to making the S7TT able to do it?
Unlikely. The S7's years are now in their final time. If Saleen wanted to beat the record, it'd have to do it very quickly. That, or someone else would have to take their own.

I believe so, but the Veyron wasn't in production for 6 years and hadn't gone through 3 models to achieve this.

I'm a bit concerned about those tires, as they only go up to 188mph according to the manufacturer. Either SSC got a special version, or they used them out of specs, which would be an unbearable risk. Any ideas?
Who knows, but maybe they did. Michelin is listed as a sponsor for the manufacturer so they may have lent in something better than usual.
