Vga To Dvi Monitor

I have inherited a LCD monitor for my computer and I have a Radeon 9600 video card that has a VGA port and a DVI port. Now, I've had this LCD hooked up to the VGA for a week or so before I realised I could hook it up to the DVI with the intention (eventually) for a dual monitor set up.

The monitor connects via VGA. I know I can buy an adaptor make it DVI which is why I'm here......

Will the VGA>DVI adaptor improve video quality? Or will it just allow me to connect the LCD to the DVI without any visual improvement?

I can live without the dual monitors if it does not improve quality. I'm not going to buy a LCD with DVI just for that sole purpose.....

any help?

A VGA > DVI converter will not omprove picture qualty. It just allows you to hook up a VGA monitor to your DVI port in order to use dual monitors.

DVi is better than VGA, but if you're using a VGA compatible LCD with no native DVI output, then its like running an PS2 through a VCR. You'll lose the DVI quality and it will just be VGA. The LCD won't support DVI signal. It's sending its VGA signal through DVI, but it's still a VGA signal.

Think about it like this - if you have an eight lane highway you can get a bunch of cars headed the same direction. But if they're all taking the same single lane exit when they get to their destination, you still only have the speed of a single lane no matter how fast they're moving before they get there.

So, it would just allow a connection to the DVI port but not improve the picture. I guess that is why its called an adapter and not a convertor.

I guess if I really want to improve the picture, I would have to get a LCD with DVI plug native

I should find the manual....I wonder if it would have the capability of DVI if connected through the adaptor eventhough it came as a VGA plug? 💡
is that possible?

Not possible. And I believe "converter" and "adapter" have the same meaning

An LCD with DVI is what you want for best image quality, but honestly I don't think it's necessary unless you're doing really high end stuff.

I think the meanings are different....although in computer land, they probably are the same

...and if this LCD does not support DVI, then I will not be paying for one that does. I don't need one that bad, just thought it would be cool to have the best that I could get from it.....

...plus I'll need that money next year if I want to afford a PS3 and GT? (plus a HD tv!)

Exactly. My video card has dual DVI ports and no VGA ports, but I'm cheap and only have an old VGA 17" CRT monitor. So, needless to say I'm running a VGA > DVI converter and haven't noticed any improved picture quality.
