The SAG-AFTRA, the union that is responsible for a quarter of the employment in the video game industry, has voted today to strike from select publishers after a two-year negotiation process failed to produce a new working contract. The SAG-AFTRA is responsible for representing actors Roger Craig Smith, Jennifer Hale and Wil Wheaton among others in the video game industry. The strike applies to games that started production after February 17th, 2015, but many studios have included "No-Strike" clauses in the contracts.

According to the Union, the industry has refused a demand that would pay actors a "Full-scale payment" for every 500,000 units that a game sells, for a maximum of four payments if a game sells up to and over 2 million units. Additionally, they claim that the industry has denied a proposal that would reduce recording time for "vocally stressful" sessions to two hours to help prevent an actor from damaging their voice.

The industry countered by offering a 9% pay hike across the board and compensation of up to $950 per game based on the number of voice acting sessions an actor did on a particular game. Combined with the wage hike, the package could potentially lead to a 23% pay hike for some actors.

As things stand now, voice actors represented by SAG-AFTRA are paid at least $100/hr plus benefits. Another proposal put forth is that it would allow publishers to fine SAG-AFTRA "tens of thousands of dollars" if an approved agent is not involved with every audition for their client. The industry also wants a provision that would fine actors $1,000 or more if they show up late to work or are deemed to be not fully participating in a recording session.

The union also wants the industry to loosen up on its secrecy rules. As it stands, according to the union, an actor sometimes does not even know what game he or she is auditioning for, which it argues is not fair.
