Volkswagen creates 1.0L 3-Cylinder with 268hp

The most interesting engine is the high-performance 1.0-liter 3-cylinder TSI based on the EA211 engine. The unit is capable of generating 272PS (268hp) and 270Nm (199lb-ft) of torque thanks to a monoscroll turbocharger and e-booster. “A nice example of just how much potential combustion engines still have in them,” said Volkswagen Group Head of Powertrain Development, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer. However, VW didn’t say whether this engine is ready for production or is still in the development phase.
 
Interesting. I'll wait for the reviews on this one, I'd be impressed if they managed to make this work without the engine being overly peaky or having long term reliability issues (it is a VAG product, after all). If they make it work and work well, it'd be perfect for pretty much everything. Imagine this in a GTI!
 
This is now my new favorite engine and probably will be for quite some time. Imagine putting this little thing into a AW11, it would be awesome and quite possibly terrifying.

Edit: Well looks like everyone is already thinking about what to stick this into.
 
How does it compare to that tiny Nissan engine I can't recall the name of?

Edit+ They can stick it in the Polo.
 
VW made something electric for the engine. :ouch: That's going to be expensive in 10 years.

Seriously, though... That's awesome.
 
I worry that the engine may have a very on-off nature and won't be very good for normal cars.
It is a prototype.

There's some clever technology in there though:

The E-booster is an electric compressor which is located between the induction system and the intercooler - From very low revs, when exhaust gas energy to drive the turbocharger is in short supply, a bypass valve shuts to re-route the air to the compressor helping out performance before boost comes on. It adds a few horses to the initial turbocharged setup and adds usable torque.

Still sounds like it'll be tricky to drive smoothly to me. It's impressive tech, don't get me wrong, but I'm withholding judgement until they bring out a production version.
 
About 2/3 of the displacement and twice the power, than a 1.4 that will break down before reaching 100,000 km and can't be fixed at the dealer, by the same company. Get ready to buy new engine every 75,000 km.
 
VW should be getting more conservertive with their engines or atleast keep with them before pushing towards even more stressed engines, the new Polo GTI is a good start though.

There is a reason why the Japanese car industry in the most part have ignored the trend to go with downsized Turbo engines for their mainstream cars.

In Australia VW have taken a massive hit in sales due to the horrific 1.4TSI engine that is common to explode before 40,000kms.
 
That wasn't a tiny engine. It was a lightweight 80 lb. engine with a huge turbocharger on top. Not for street use.
 
Physically, the ZEOD's engine was incredibly tiny. But as Omnis rightly pointed out, it wasn't for street use, and as it turned out it didn't do very well on a racetrack either.
