In the early to mid 90's Volkswagen in Brazil needed a new halo/hero car. Their most popular model of the time was the recently released rounded-design Gol, a cousin of the european Golf, designed and made for the local South American market. It's most popular version was the 4 cylinder 1.0 popular model, but that was no sports car. So they dipped into the european Volkswagen family parts bin and borrowed some parts from Audi and Volkswagen De.
The engine block was a 2.0 4 cylinder from the Golf and the 16 valve head and 5 speed gearbox were from Audi. Curiously, the engine was mounted longitudinally instead of transversally like in the Golf. Because of this, a smaller radiator is fitted to the left of the engine so it all fits under the bonnet. And a bubble on the bonnet also had to be fitted to clear the front of the engine.
