The Schwimmwagen designed by Erwin Komenda and Ferdinand Porsche was produced by Volkswagen during WWII became the most mass produced amphibious vehicle of all time. The Schwimmwagen that we all know (the Typ 166 that is featured in Gran Turismo 5 and 6) is 4 wheel drive and has a body tub which seals the chassis.
However, before the Typ 166 began production in 1942, 30 prototypes were manufactured in 1941. These were called the Typ 128 Schwimmwagens. Unlike the production 166's, the 128 had the Typ 82 Kübelwagen's full length chassis which meant the 128 it was much longer than the 166.
Since the 128 was built before 1943, they all had Volkswagen's earliest engine: 985cc Flat 4 which makes 22HP @ 3,000 RPM.
Testing of the prototypes proved they weren't very rugged which help iron out the issues for the 166.
Engine: 985cc Flat-4
Horsepower: 22 @ 3,000 RPM
Transmission: 4-Speed Manual and 2-Speed Transfer case
