Volvo is to show an SUV concept called XC60 in Detroit next month. A compact SUV smaller than the XC90, it'll be Volvo's rival for the BMW X3, the upcoming Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class and Saab 9-4X when it goes into production in 2009. It will also be up against SUVs from two other companies under the Ford umbrella, the Land Rover Freelander and the Mazda CX-7, to which it bears some resemblance in its styling and general outline.
Described by Volvo as a 'small premium utility vehicle', the XC60 will be safe as well as sporty: it's the first Volvo to feature City Safety technology, which automatically brakes if sensors detect that a low-speed collision is imminent. It'll be comfy and well specified, too, with an iPod-inspired cabin, finished in white on the show car although that's unlikely to prove a popular choice on the production car.
Volvo hasn't released any technical details of the XC60 yet, but it is said to share much of its underpinnings with the latest Freelander, itself built on Ford's EU-CD platform which also forms the basis of the S-Max, Galaxy, new Mondeo and Volvo S80. It could feature engines including the Yamaha-supplied 4.4 V8 as used in the XC90 and S80, an engine also earmarked for future fitment in the Freelander.
