"Biggest surprise at the Tokyo motor show came from VW in the shape of the rear-drive, mid-engined Eco Racer. With a carbonfibre body, racing springs and dampers and a 'race mode' that sharpens the steering and the DSG gearbox's shifts, it's certainly got the Racer part covered. The Eco prefix applies to the engine - a four-pot 1.5-litre turbo-diesel that produces a solid 134bhp at 4000rpm and 184lb ft of torque between 1900 and 3750rpm. Enough, says VW, to propel the 850kg car to 62mph in 6.3sec and on to a top speed of 142mph. It will also return as much as 83mpg."

I think this is a great idea for a car. Economy combined with serious enthusiast intentions should be a winning mix. However, I am skeptical on how the diesel powerplant will perform.

I couldnt say for sure, but dont expect the car to go into production. However, the new engine may be the unit that will replace the current 1.9L unit found in almost every model here in the US. From a VW fans perspective, its about time...

I'm happy to see that Diesel power is making it onto the turntables as I believe it is a better alternative to small-displacement I4s attached to hybrids... They are cheaper, last longer, and burn the same ammount of oil, all while giving off far better performance at the same time.

It will be interesting to see if the powerplant makes it's way into the Eos, but more than likely it wont.

How about a diesel hybrid? ;)

Diesel Hybrid technology seems like a good idea, but I'm still not sold on it as it is still too expensive and too complicated to put on every car. I think the US should seriously consider switching to diesel technology and invest in biodiesel... Being that it is partially made from corn, and the US being the worlds largest producer of corn, seems to make sense...

The same can be said of Ethenol technology... GM allredy has engines that can run on up to 80% ethenol blends...

Yeah...but instead, we're investing in relatively pointless hydrogen systems... :indiff:
