Wal-Mart Ordered to Stock Emergency Contraception

Tuesday, February 14, 2006

BOSTON — The state pharmacy board ordered Wal-Mart on Tuesday to stock emergency contraception pills at its stores in Massachusetts.
I am of the opinion that the government should not be able to tell a company what products to carry, especially if it is a controversial product.

Abortion rights activists led this lawsuit and I don't see why. Is Wal*Mart the only pharmacy in all of Massachusetts?

The government also can't let religious beliefs dictate what pharmacies carry.

Edit: I should also add that the morning after pill is not equivalent to abortion. If conception has occured, the pill does nothing.

I didn't mention religion once and neither did Wal*Mart.

I also understand how the morning after pill works. I am only complaining about government interference with a private company.

👍 The government shouldn't be telling any private business they have to carry certain products.

Isn't this the second time the state of Massachusetts has told Wal*Mart how to run an aspect of their business?

So what criteria are allowable for a company to use to determine what it carries?

Wal*Mart should be allowed to decide what it wants to sell, no matter how they decide that. End of story.

Liberalism is a truly scary thing. I guess they figure that nobody goes to any other pharmacy then wal-mart so they have to force it on them so that people have access to it. Yeah, that's a logical train of thought.

What does the legisilation of state governments have against Wal-Mart? In Maryland, my state, they overrode the veto of the ridiculous healthcare bill that only effected wal-mart. West Virginia is thinking of the same thing along with Georgia.

Is Wal-Mart so evil that the states feel they need to regulate them? I guess the obvious answer to that question is yes. 👎

*ahem*

What exactly do these pills do?
When the egg becomes fertilized it must attach itself to the uterus wall before it can go any further.

The morning after pill delivers a huge dosage of hormones which prevents the attachement from happening and the egg cannot develop beyond an egg.

Ahh..

'Nother words: Abortion
Depends on how you look at it.

Essentially it is a hyper-fast birth control pill that works quicker than the process of conception does. If someone considers a birth-control pill abortion , then yes it is the same.

Doh! That's what I was thinking about.

Well I'd call it abortion if they know they are pregnant, if they don't then probably not.

How does them knowing whether or not they're pregnant have anything to do with it? It isn't possible to know whether or not you're pregnant that early. So then you wouldn't consider the morning after pill an abortion.

Yeah, you only get a five day window. No one knows that early.

The goal of this pill is that you partied too hard, hooked up without other protection, and then you go get this from the pharmacy just to be safe.

^one of the reasons I don't come to this forum often.

Why is that? Having a hard time backing up your thoughts when someone challenges them? That my friend is the entire point of the opinions forum. :)

Excactly. I feel no need to explain my opinions. I was just curious what the pill was for and now danoff has turned it into some bull**** arguement.

No, he's asking you to define what you have said. If you're not up to that task, I would suggest researching the information through google next time.

Its not that, they just want to prove a point. They don't want a large corporation to inconvenience them for not sharing their beliefs. Im sure it was played up as a tremendous inconvenience for those who led the lawsuit though. Typical....

As far as Walmart's standpoint, I wouldn't go as far as to call it a religious stance, rather just a moral stance, and I don't think they should be forced to supply a product that goes against "the company's" morals.

Yeah, that's about it right there.

You said that the Morning After Pill was an abortion. It isn't. It's a period-trigger. It's a dose of hormones which causes the uterus to shed its lining, wherever a woman's body is in its "natural" menstrual cycle (though let's face it, you're pretty much in-line with your normal cycle if you're considering the Morning After Pill). An egg (or embryo) has nothing to implant itself into even IF if it has been fertilised, and passes out of the body as it normally would.

No harm is caused to the egg/embryo/zOMfG it's a new life at all. No pregnancy has occurred. Therefore it is not an abortion.

Well, they say it is business reasons, which could even mean they just want to avoid pro-life groups protesting. However, when you look at some of their other product decisions I would guess that it is a moral based decision.

Sorry to be off-topic, but Famine that was your 15,000th post!

[sarcasm] No way Famine, it isn't an abortion because they don't know they're pregnant. The definition of abortion (as per wikipedia) is:

" the termination of a pregnancy associated with the death of an embryo or a fetus. "

Right there it clearly says that the woman has to know about the pregnancy. [/sarcasm]

And in fact they aren't pregnant - as again, according to Wikipedia:

Wikipedia
pregnancy technically begins at implantation

Morning After Pill = Shedding of endometrium. No endometrium = no implantation. No implantation = no pregnancy.

Bwa-ha!

Might as well be just as mad at coporate interference in government. ;)

Here in Canada, the pharmacy department of a grocery or department store is controlled partly by forces other then the store itself. Due to drug administration, products they carry, the way they are handled, as well as other things are all controlled by the federal government. Even the people hired are not considered employee's of the store, but of the pharmacy itself, meaning if the employee's went on strike or took time off for a company event, the pharmacy would still stay open.
Although the store would determine what products they carry in other departments, the government could make it their obligation and duty as a pharmacy to carry those products that the FDA has made available to the public. If Walmart doesn't want to adhere to those guidlines, then they shouldn't have a pharmacy available to the public.
