Mah soundcard isn't recognised, or maybe not recognised but it obviously doesn't have the appropriate drivers for it. Soooo I went to the cirrus logic site and downloaded what look like Linux drivers here but then I extract the zip file and there are just a load of files which I have no idea what to do with the files. There isn't a readme file in the archive, nor could I find instructions on the site or other websites. Oh and Linux's help feature is more useless than windows.

In other words, ARGH! help me! :D

So are you using RH7.1? You know there are newer releases than that. I'd suggest 7.3 I've heard mixed results about RH8, however, so beware of that, rumor has it that it's much slower, but then there are the other people that say it's nicer.
I'm experimenting with Slackware 8.1 right now(9 came out a while ago), but I'm not going to change distributions yet until I figure out why my network settings for it are a little off. I'm guessing there might be a built-in firewall or something in Slackware or possibly the Linux kernel, but I doubt there would be a firewall in the kernel.
I would suggest using www.linuxquestions.org or their messageboard http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/index.php?
I've learned quite a few tips that saved me plenty of times. Sorry I can't help you much, but I myself am still a n00b for Linux and am trying to smooth out my system(then I might iron it out, I'm not sure yet...) What are your system specs? If they're not too great, it might be best to run Slackware, since that runs on low-end machines as well as high-end machines(some people running Slackware are using 486's!, but there are plenty others that use it on higher-end systems.) The nice thing about Slackware for me is that Appache runs without any problems. Now if I just knew where to modify it so I could have my own page instead of Appache's default page for showing that it works......

Yeah, i'm using redhat 8 mainly because it was the only version to download. It seems to run smoothly on this P3 600mhz machine, with 760mb ram.

Thanks for the link, will check it oot.

Ahhhhhhhh!
I'm not posting anything there, mainly because I don't want to look like a complete idiot.

Oh well looks like i'm going to have to buy 'Linux for dummies'

*runs*
*Jumps off a cliff*

Unless someone else can reccomend a good book for getting aquainted with Linux?

How could you not know that one of your systems has two OS's on it? Did you really think that formatting your hard drive would take up that much space?

No I had an old P2 266 box that I installed Mandrake 7 on. I was just looking at it wondering what the hell was on in, then I realised 'Duh, you installed Mandrake on it like 3 months ago and then never touched it'.

My gruntwork Pc has Redhat and Win2k on it.
