Well, after a few hours of work and confusion, GTPlanet is finally running on our new, dedicated server! I want to thank our resident server-guru, LoudMusic, for helping me get everything straight and in working order - I couldn't have done it without him! Once again, thanks for all your help, Paul! Here's a special new smilie just for you... :loudmusic

I believe the whole point of it was because of the reoccuring "lag" that the planet was experiencing due to other websites being hosted on the same server and running intensive Java based processes.

The new server where the Planet or at least the Forums now reside is on a dedicated box (server) were 100% of the servers computing power is dedicated to the the Planet in hopes of reducing the dreaded "lag".

( I hope I explained this correctly Jordan, correct me if/when I'm wrong...;) )

I'm glad to see everyone's enjoying GTPlanet's new home! :)

Pako did a good job of explaining one of the main reasons for the switch. With our old host, GTPlanet was located on a machine with several hundred other websites, which works perfectly fine until a few dynamic (server-generated content, such as forums), high-traffic websites all start fighting for the same CPU resources. That's when everything (including GTPlanet) starts producing nasty error messages and grinds to a halt. Now, obviously, this isn't a problem, as GTPlanet has the server all to itself. :)

Of course, there are many other reasons for the move, too, such as access to the whole 20 GB hard drive, and more bandwidth which could be needed for the new websites I'm developing. If you're interested, you can see photos of where the new machine is located here.

Anyway "MY GTPLANET" will not work but I guess it is cause the new serfer.
Sorry, the link was pointing to the wrong location. Thanks for pointing that out, it should be working now. :)

It's a gift to him to thank him for his help, and it's very appropriate because he's the only one I know of who uses the "backwards" smilie. :loudmusic

Seems to be working just fine here, but one question. Will the links ever work (like the ones I my sig.) or should we delete them and make new ones?

Looks like we got the New Year off to a good start.. :D ;)

Oh, yes, of course they'll work, it will just take a few days for the DNS information to update in your area. :)

OKie, thanks for explaining it.

Hmm. Interesting phenomenon: Getting "This page cannot be displayed" when trying to access forums.gtplanet.net. Hope my DNS info updates soon!

Yeah, it seems that some people's DNS info has started updating, and the forums subdomain isn't working (this is why nobody's online - they think the site's down!). Oh boy...wish me luck! :(

Thanks, Pako! :) I think I have this whole sub-domain issue resolved, but I'm not sure yet since I'm still waiting for my ISP's DNS info to update. So, if you're reading this right now, please do me a favor and let me know what you see when you visit http://forums.gtplanet.net. Do you get the page that says our database has been moved, "The page cannot be displayed", or do you simply enter the forums normally? Please let me know! :)

I just glad I found the forums. I kept trying the regular way for quite awhile and was getting nowhere. If it wasn't for Tatinee for giving me the new address, I would have ended up going through withdrawal. :D

Thanks, Pako, it looks like your DNS has been updated. :) Now, may I ask you what you see when you visit https://www.gtplanet.net/forums/?

I'm very sorry about all this confusion, this whole sub-domain issue is appearing to be a much bigger headache than I anticipated! :(

Well, I was able to setup a temporary fix, but it will only work if you try to enter the forums via the forum's home page at http://forums.gtplanet.net. All other links leading into the site still won't work. Let's hope this gets resolved tomorrow... :nervous:

Hello!

Quick status update for you:

Today, currently, at 09:36GMT, I am getting "The server has moved" when I try to access www.gtplanet.net/forums and forums.gtplanet.net. I can (as you see) access the site OK via its ip address.

Last night, at about 18:30GMT, just after I posted my earlier message, my "This page cannot be displayed" error was actually an "Error 500: Internal Server Error".

I'm on a different provider now (BT vs Telewest, if anyone cares), so different DNS servers.

Hope that gives you some information you (a) needed and (b) didn't already know! :)

Good luck getting this one sorted. :) I bet you thought that a new server would be all your problems over! ;)
