Is DivX an AVI file format player or is it just a component needeed to play AVI files? Or is something else? I know it has sometihng to do with AVI files.

DivX is based on the MPEG-4 compression technology. It compresses video files like MPEG-2 into smaller files, but retains the quality of the large file. You can download a DivX codec for Windows Media Player or you can download DivX's own video player. DivX is NOT the company that competed with DVD discs. That was a different DivX.

I think you're a big boy now. You can go research this stuff for yourself.

I do research it. You computer experts here are my sources though. :D

DivX is good stuff. I'm glad they got over the legal bumps.

(And the DVD Divx people - EVIL folks they were...)

Has anyone done any divx encoding?

Im fooling around with it and my capture card but I get quite poor results, maybe I just need to tweak the quality settings a little.

Probably. Most video compression takes some tweaking to get right.

Oh, and your avatar rocks. ;)

Thanks mate. :)

Well most of my videos have been encoded in wmv format, but I would like to make a high quality divx GT3/GTC video. Does it have anything to do with the editing software your using?

I use Sonic foundry vegas video 3.

divx is the mp3 of video codecs. you can now get a 700mb movie that will be perfect quality with almost no or no degraded quality.

divx is used mostly for movies. go on irc and you will find tons of divx movies.

goto www.divx-digest.com and read up about it.

Not only is DivX all the things these people mentioned here... but it is also a (now defunct) version of DVDs.

This DVD-like format would have your movies expire a few days after watching them, and then have you pay for them over and over again to watch them. DivX was supposed to be backwards compatible with the "old" DVD format. But it never caught on because people were too damn smart.

I think it was actually even worse than that. Last I heard (this was a long time ago, so may no longer be accurate) Divx DVDs were going to be about $5 to buy. But, to even watch it once, you had to pay for the viewing through a DSS-like telephone line plugged into your player. You could then watch that DVD as much as you wanted for 24 hours.

This really freaked out the privacy folks, as Divx suddenly had a record of your viewing habits.
