What happened to the JPM Gordon switch?

I had heard through the grapevine that JPM and Jeff Gordon were going to switch cars for a demo or something. Anyone know anything more about this? I think it would be interesting to see if Gordon could handle the FW24 making both left and right turns. We already know that Montoya kicks a** driving in circles really fast.

I hear it's going to happen in the week of the Indianapolis GP.

I would be interested to see a demo run of the FW24 on the Indy oval. It would be fascinating to see the engineers set the car up for the oval, and a real hard-case like Montoya drive it. Anyone care to bet on a 240mph lap?

Whats even more interseting about this is that there will be an American behind the wheel of an F1 car. Could drum up some more interest in F1 in the US. On top of the fact that Red Bull is trying to get there hands on ArrowsOrange to make it Red Bull American Racing or something like that.

The Arrows saga is a whole different kettle of fish! I think you'd do better to look towards Bryan Herta to be the first person since Michael Andretti to drive an F1 car competitively. But then a lot of people are talking about Da Matta being the next ChampCar driver to cross the Atlantic.

Yes, it's going to be at the USGP, and I'll be there to see it! :D It will be interesting to see how many times Gordon spins out in a real race car... :P

You can bet that if the thing starts to slide, he'll be off! My bet is he's either 10s off the pace, or in a gravel trap/wall.

Actually, the most obvious thing is that Juan, when asked about driving Gordon's car, will say "It was excellent. I really enjoyed it"

Well I think they will both do fine. JPM will do better in a stock car than will gordan in an F1, I would love to see the F1 cars go around the indy oval, and yes I will take your bet. I say around 235.

Hmm. I wonder...

Since this is extremely unlikely ever to happen, I wonder if we could talk someone in Williams into doing a simulation...

I hope JPM doesn't enjoy it so much that he leaves F1...
Yep, click on the USGP link in my signature for photos from last year's race. As for this year...I'm taking along some extreme digital photography buffs so I should have several hundred images to add to a new gallery every day of the event. :D I also have good seats directly above the first turn so we should have some good shots from there as well. :)

Excellent! That's got to be the place to be at Indy! See if you can get security to let you take a few shots from as close to the wall as possible. Quality pics of the cars at ground level are fab! I'll be posting some (half-decent) ones on my site soon.

OK, I've met Frank Williams, and my father is quite good friends with him. My wife wants to meet him, and we're going to my parents for Christmas this year - Dad's going to try to set up a meeting. I'll ask then. If I pull it off, I'll drag this thread back up, and we'll run the bet. Someone needs to think of a stake. It needs to be something fun, and to bear in mind the fact that we're on different sides of the world. Perhaps the loser should have a large item in their signature saying "[winner] knows more about F1 than me" for a month.

If we pull it off, maybe Jordan could do something with the core GTPlanet site in honour...

Yes, it's the best place to watch the race because you get to see all the turn 1 action as well as everything else on the track thanks to the video monitors. For practice and qualifying, however, I will hang out along the back straightaway. It's the best place to see the cars moving slowly (that's a relative term, of course) in closer proximity.

I can't believe marshals let you walk right up to the fence! I'm going to have to try that. Last year, I was able to get some cool shots through the opening in the barrier on the outside of turn 8. All in all, I was no more than 20-30 feet away from the cars as they braked and downshifted into the corner! One of those small orange plastic fences was all that was between myself and a few marshals - I'm sure they would have let me hop the fence for a few shots had I just asked! :dunce:

One of the funniest things I saw the whole weekend was also right there at turn 8. One of the Mercedes-Benz F1 SUV's was between the orange fence and the wall, all of the doors open and the radio blaring, with 4 marshals sprawled out sound asleep! How anyone could sleep through the scream of the cars as they came down the straightaway and downshifted only a few feet away, I'll never know! You'll see those guys were having a pretty good time - notice the box of KrispyKreme doughnuts sitting on the wall! :D

Sleeping through an F1 session?

My favourite sound ever was when I was standing on the Casino bridge at Montreal. The F1 cars were coming towards us at full chat, going underneath, and then braking for the chicane. Best sound in the world, bar none!

Grrr! 7 months till my next GP!!!

I know - they must travel to all the races, but must not be too interested in the sport.

I couldn't agree more about the bridges! The sound is strangely amplified inside those bridges... Oh, you're getting me all excited!!! :D

Ah, come on over, I'll take you with me to Indy! :)

It's the way that when they're coming towards you, there's this sort of muted scream, and then they go underneath and you have the full sonic assault.

Cheers Jordan

If you take loads of Digital Pics you could probably sell them to Mags etc? :computer:

I'd guess 250 MPH. That is a huge track, and the turns are gradual enough that they could probably reach that speed.

I can't wait to hear about the JPM/Gordon switch.
