What Wheel to Get?

Well, hi guys. Got a few questions about what wheel to get to get myself ready for Assetto Corsa and the like, so here goes.

The possible options I'm currently looking at are mainly these four, favourites first:

1.: Fanatec Porsche 911 GT3 RS V2 CSR Elite Edition EU, which consists of the GT3 RS wheel and the CSR Elite pedals. 260 €.

2.: Forza Motorsport CSR wheel value pack EU, consisting of the Forza CSR wheel and the normal CSR pedals. 250 €.

3.: Forza Motorsport CSR wheel value pack XL EU. This'll get me the same wheel as above, alongside the CSR Elite pedals and the CSR Shifter set. 360 €.

4.: Logitech G27, 300 €.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the first option. Xbox compatibility isn't really that big of an issue for me, so I'd be okay with the GT3 wheel, as long as it's as good as the Forza CSR wheel. I've experienced that a bit and liked it. I've got to admit, though, I've got no experience with the G27. I only remember the G25 and I'd prefer the Fanatec wheel to that, I'd say.

So, basically, these are my question:

  • Is there a reason to go for the Forza CSR wheel over the Porsche GT3 wheel, Xbox compatibility aside?
  • Is the difference between the CSR pedals and the CSR Elite pedals big enough to be a factor?
  • Is the G27 worth it, compared to the packages Fanatec offers?

I already did some research and, from what little comparisons I've found, it seems that the Fanatec wheels have been getting quite some praise, but I'd like to get some opinions from the good ol' GTP community 👍

Thanks in advance.

From what I gather the CSR wheel has better shifter paddles. Only used the ones on the CSR Elite at HoiHman's place (they are the same as on the CSR). I liked them though, felt nice, solid and reliable. I have no experience wifh the older zporsche wheels.

CSR Elite pedals would be better. You can adjust the pedal plates, you can invert the pedals via an optional kit. And although opinions might very about what is technically better, the load cell design is probably better executed to reproduce a better feel for braking.

The G27 is not worth it over a belt drive solution. The G27 experience is not much different than that on the G25 you are familiar with. Yes it is quieter, but you still get the firmware based permanent deadzone to avoid oscillation. A belt drive solution should be more silent and more direct than a geared solution. Just look at the move in the industry overall to realize what is technically better, if you don't want to take my word for it. ;)

I would get a CSR plus elite pedal package from what you suggested. Yes, it is more expensive but it will last you a bit longer too in terms of features (can't say anything about reliability since I don't own them). With the others I am afraid you might end up thinking after some time "darn, if only..., cause this is not really what I want".

THanks for the advice, LogiForce 👍

I guess those additional 100 bucks won't kill me in the long run. Plus, I'd be able to get the value pack now, before that offer runs out. Xbox compatibility might not be a huge deal to me, but I could at least use the wheel with Forza, for the time being.

Update: Pulled the trigger on the XL pack today. CSR Wheel, CSR Elite Pedals, CSR Shifter. Looking forward to it 👍

Nice set... I own both the CSR with the Elite Pedals and the Fanatec Porsche 911 GT3 RS V2. I prefer the GT3 RS V2 over the CSR because it feels more like a real wheel. But both are very nice for the price.

I would not get the standard fanatec pedals. Elite or club sport are the way to go there. I have a TurboS and a CSR Elite. TurboS came with standard pedals which I later upgraded to club sport pedals and then later went to the Elite wheel.

standard pedals had some issues, got a replacement set and they had issues as well.

The big differences in the wheels between the TurboS,GT2,GT3 and the CSR is the shifters which are much better on the CSR and the buttons for start, select and the dpad all of which are a bit clunky on the wheels prior to the CSR. The CSR has a little stick for the dpad which seems a bit flimsy but much preferred over that odd button at the bottom of the other wheels.

The CSR on the other hand does not light up the buttons like the others do. On the CSR they are marked for the 360 and of course it has the Forza logo on it. If you want to play Forza or any other 360 driver then it is a no brainer and you need to get a CSR with elite pedals.

The big difference in the pedals standard vs elite is the load cell on the brake which is huge when driving without ABS. I find it works great in Forza. I have 3 friends who have the elite pedals, while I prefer the CS pedals. I do not know how the standard CSR pedals do but the Standard Porsche pedals where junk and had to be replaced.
