Im really in to DVDs and well would like to have a good dvd player. For about a year and a half now iv been using a RCA RC5240P and well i think its getting ready to poop out on me. Im pretty sure its cause i watch movies like crazy on that thing. I need a good DVD player that can handle being used 10-15 times a week for more then 2 years. Im willing to play up to $350 for a good one that can handle my demands for movie watching  Anyways anyone have a good suggestion for me?

After spending over two years at Circuit City (part time job) I learned about a few good ones. Denon and Harmon Kardon, both, make excellent DVD Players.

I picked up a Proscan more than 4 years ago (shortly after they came out) and it's still running fine. Proscan is a more refined version of RCA (both made by Thompson electronics). I would say that in the first 3 years that I had that my roommate and I watched about 10-12 movies a week. We ammassed a collection of nearly 350 movies.

My suggestion is to research DVD Players at audioreview.com. Then find a local store that sells the three you narrow it down to. Find out about return policy, before you buy it, as you're looking for a high quality player that gets excessive use and needs to have very good video response.

Good luck and tell us what you found.

This shouldn't run you more than $300. Progressive scan, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW etc. It should look and sound fantastic on any setup - even if you don't have an HDTV.

Only 153? My family has a combined number of DVD's around 25! Jeese!
Our DVD player probably cost somewhere in the $200 range, I'm guessing. I never saw the reciept, but I kind of know my dad's spending limits. Main thing our DVD player has is progressive scan. Little did my dad know, that our TV doesn't support progressive scan, but he's too ignorant and stubborn to realize we aren't getting the progressive scan benefits.

Oh yeah, our DVD player supports DVD's(NTSC and PAL, must be region 1 though...;()VCD, SVCD, MP3, CD-R/W, and either DVD-R/W or DVD+R/W, not sure which...

Only my two cents:

If you're into [popular retail store] DVD players, Sony and Toshiba are the way to go.

If you need multi-format capability but aren't as concerned with long-term quality, go with an Apex.

If you want high-end, but more expensive, quality, Denon.

(Unfortunately, I don't know here nor there on Harmon Kardon DVD players.)

On a side, but related note: I had long been a fan of Mitsubishi electronics--great projection TVs...but poor DVD players. Moral of the story, go with the manufacturer that makes the best component, rather than one manufacturer for your 'entire system'.

I sell both H/K and Denon. Yes, Denon is very nice if you don't mind spending the money. I wouldn't bother unless you have a large, high-quality projection television. The H/K is as much and a little more than most peole need for not unreasonable money. :)

i reccomend to u that u get a dvd player that can play everything Dvd, Dvd-r, dvd-rw, mp3, vcd, svcd, hdcd, etc.. u could find one of those on ebay for under 100 bucks.. and its got a 5.1 output for all u surround sound ppl..

Why not just buy a sub-$100 player from the store? Many decent players hover around the $100 mark now, not just no-names.

Broad compatibility is a good idea, but 5.1 outputs are almost useless unless:

A) You already own a Pro Logic receiver with 5.1 inputs.

B) You will be using DVD-Audio or SACD in surround (generally, you'll spend more than $100 for a DVD-A or SACD player).

Almost any worthwhile surround receiver you buy now will decode Dolby Digital and DTS - meaning that you need only one audio connection, instead of six.
