I am looking to buy one of the classic muscle cars for the races I need them for. Which one is the best straight out of the box? Or do I win one somewhere?

The 1970 challenger is good value for money, and you can race mod it. The Shelby Cobra can hang with a lot of high hp cars.

Most of the muscle cars will need some mods to win, but right out of the box the 70 Challenger is the best value. Especially if you enjoy driving with the cockpit view. It's also not a prize car. You will win the late model Challenger, 62 Buick, and Shelby Cobra in the American races.
I have a fully modded Mach1. It's quite suffice w/the mods.
I have not driven the Mercury Cougar XR7 in GT5 yet but it was a good performer in GT4. It will show up in UCD. It's the cousin car to the Mustang of the era.
Edit: I think PD didn't do the research on the muscle car era. The big block mopars were drag race cars. The R/T moniker is misleading. I owned a 340 6-pack T/A Challenger back in the day and would have put that up against an R/T on any road course. Same as the AAR Cuda. The balance on the small black cars made a huge diff in how they handled.

I used the 1970 charger r/t 440 I think. It worked pretty well. It only has 4 gears when you buy it though so be sure to give it transmission. You may want a supercharger too.

Too late I guess but the 70 challengeris the way to go. for all the reasons above plus you need it for the seasonal challenge. The challenge will pay you back for the car plus whatever mods you put on it.

Yeah I may still get a Challenger, but I'm gonna try again with the GT350R. I ran it straight of the dealer lot (didn't even change the oil), and I placed second to another GT350R, but the Corvettes had much higher speed on the straights. I just modded the R, so I'm off to give it another go.

I think the Buick 62 Special that you win in A-spec Classic Muscle Car Championship is incredible. Super fast even before tuning.

They are all good enough for the events if you add the race tranny and up the top speed a bit.

The Camaro and Challenger can be race modded so they can be made to turn the fastest laps. The Cougar has the best power to weight ratio but no downforce so it is very fast but not as good as some of the others in high speed corners.

You could just do like me and get them all :)
