Okay, i work at a New World (claimed to be one of the tidiest supermarkets in the South Island, or maybe even NZ?) in Dunners and Thursday last week one of my bosses (grocery manager) came up to me and said the facial hair (see pic below) has to be shaven off or grown into a beard or moustache.

I'd been growing and maintaining it at the length it is below since i got a electric shaver thing last Christmas. So thats pretty much more than eight months ago, and yet they only just say something about it now...

The owner of the shop has decided that he wants everyone clean shaven or growing a beard/mo etc. Literally 99% of the people i've told or who knew about it (workmates, bakery guys and customers/friends) think that its an absolute crock of <insert expletive here> (their quote) that i have to shave it off or grow it, cos all of them have said it looks tidy (pic ain't the best).

Should probably mention that i had to do one or the other, otherwise they send me home (stand down) for three days and if i haven't shaven it or decided to grow it by then then they'll consider that as termination of my employment...

All it says in the contract is "Maintain a clean and tidy appearance". NOWHERE does it even mention the word shaving, or facial hair, so its pretty much up to the owners discretion.

Pretty much nothing legal i can do about it either, which seems absurd. :( Hurry up Lotto gods, get me out of this job!!

What do you think about all this? Growing it into a beard BTW. Already been called Blackbeard by a workmate, so have been talking like a pirate for the last two days at work. :dopey:

That looks a lot cleaner and tidy than a beard/mustache.

Although you could throw it back in your bosses face and grow it super long.

Someone with photoshop skills should do that^^^^^^^^^

If you like/need your job, grow it out or shave it off. If you don't like/need your job, you might consider growing it out or shaving it off in order to come back to work and quit once you've found a new job.

It's not worth losing a job you like/need over the length of your facial hair.

Shave. You're a handsome fellow and that looks dumb anyway.

You still look like you should be related to me.

I find it annoying that an employer makes you appear a certain way. I mean I can see not looking like a wild man, but your facial hair looks fine. It's professional enough, especially for a super market.

I know the feeling though, I have to keep clean shaven at work because it's part of the policy. I agreed to it though so I need to follow it, although when I have to make 3am airport runs I don't really bother shaving and nothing is typically said about it.

Just trim the edges.. don't let it grow over your cheeks... if there's some definition to the edges, I can't imagine he'll be too unhappy about it.

That's what I do whenever my "boss" complains about my facial hair... shaving is such a pain...

Your beard isn't full enough to look clean while short. You need to take your boss's advice and shave or at least get a tape on what you have. Get an edger.

You are a hitherto unmentioned Gruber brother and are currently filming Die Hard 5: Only the Good Die Hard *inhales* and I claim my five pounds.

I don't think it looks tidy. You might be maintaining it, but at that length it looks like you've been sleeping in your car for the last 2 nights.

Anyway, there's not a great deal you can do. Either grow it into a 'tidy' beard, or shave it off I suppose.

That is taking the P*** have you tried talking to your union rep? if you have one.

Imagines a Murray Hewitt like character.....

Neah, shave it/grow it or you're likely to just wind your employer/line manager up. It's a pain in the ass when something you've been doing for ages is suddenly made against the rules. But like others have said, is it worth losing your job over?

I concur with this opinion. If you think it's enough of a personal issue, you need to quit. Otherwise, you need to present the image that your employer wishes you to present to the public. And I agree, this is not tidy as it stands.

You're a good looking fella and don't need the facial hair to prove your manlyhood. You don't have enough growth on the cheeks to make it look decent at this short length. I'd shave.

Judging by the comments, at least if you do lose your job you could probably get work as a male gigolo. :embarrassed:

I have to ask :)

Is it really the task of shaving or maintaining a beard that irks you, or simply the concept of "Big Brother" controlling you in a manner that you don't see as allowing you a personal freedom that you feel entitled too ?

BTW .... I've heard that those "Lotto Gods" are a cruel bunch :indiff:

To each his/her own.

Looks like a bucket of smashed crabs to me.

That beard looks cack. I think most do, generally. Mind you, it is only a supermarket. I don't tend to expect 5* presentation in them.

You look young, enjoy your life, send that mother:censored: to 🤬 and get a job where they wont annoy you with some piece of mother:censored: piece of 🤬 rule.

Ha! Good presentation is important in pretty much any face-to-face business. Looking scruffy just sucks.
